Most adapt within 1-2 weeks of consistent training.<br/>- The breed listed is our best guess (since they're rescues!)<br/><br/>The day Dasha wandered into Erika's neighborhood, she wasn't alone. She had a two-month-old puppy at her side, and together they found a shaded spot on the same block and settled in. The neighborhood wasn't friendly to stray animals - everyone who lived there knew it - but for a few days, they just slept there, mother and son, making do with whatever they could find.<br/><br/>Then someone put out poisoned food.<br/><br/>Erika called a vet immediately, and what followed felt like a miracle: Dasha survived. Her puppy did not. He was poisoned too, and he didn't make it. After that, leaving Dasha on the street wasn't something Erika could bring herself to do.<br/><br/>When Dasha first came inside, she was all ribs and fear. The hardest part wasn't her weight - it was that she was afraid to eat. After being poisoned, food had become something dangerous. "I would sit beside her, pet her, and slowly bring the bowl closer," Erika recalls. "Little by little, she started eating again." The gratitude in Dasha's eyes during those early days stayed with Erika. "I've never seen a dog look at me the way she does," she says. "She thanks me with her eyes."<br/><br/>Today, Dasha is a completely different dog. She goes for a morning walk, comes home and naps, plays a bit with the other dogs in the house - easy, gentle play, nothing rough, even with the little ones she could easily bowl over - then wanders the house calmly until the evening stroll. Her energy runs low to medium; she'd rather amble through a short, unhurried walk than run, and a word of praise will get her to do just about anything. <br/><br/>She doesn't destroy things when left alone, doesn't raid the kitchen or the trash, and happily shares her food and space with the other dogs. She follows commands immediately and is fully house-trained, never once making a mess inside. At night she settles into her own bed with a blanket in the garage. For a Belgian Shepherd, a breed that tends to be sharp and high-energy, she carries herself with a calm that comes from somewhere deep - from having been through hard things and choosing to keep going anyway.<br/><br/>With strangers, Dasha takes her time. She stays attentive and watchful, reading new people with that steady, intelligent gaze, never barking and never lunging. Her wariness traces back to the person who once handed her poisoned food; she's smart enough to remember, so she studies a new face before she decides. But once she's decided you're safe, her most distinctive trait comes out: she stands up on her back legs, wraps her front paws around you, and holds on. Not a jump, not a nudge - a real hug. It's her way of saying she's glad you're here, exactly what you'd expect from a dog who has known that kind of love matters.<br/><br/>Dasha gets along beautifully with other dogs, gentle even with the small ones and quick to share whatever's hers. Cats are more of a question mark: she notices them out on walks and fixes them with a long, intent stare, though she's never gone after one. She's independent by nature, content to do her own thing, but the moment she catches sight of you she wants to be petted. Time alone doesn't faze her - Erika has left for nearly a full day and come home to a calm, content dog and no mess - which makes her a solid fit for someone who works during the day.<br/><br/>She's a Belgian Shepherd with the soul of a grateful companion - intelligent, perceptive, obedient, and quietly devoted to the people she trusts. After five years of hard living and two years waiting in foster care, she's ready for something permanent.<br/><br/>She's already been through the worst of it. Here's what to expect:<br/><br/>Because our dogs cannot return to Mexico if there isn't a good fit, we're extra thorough in matching each dog with the right family ensuring lifelong success for both dog and adopter.<br/><br/>1. [Required] Complete our online application at www.bapbr.org<br/>2. Phone interview with director Angela if we determine there's a good fit<br/>3. We arrange the flight to Oregon (included in fee) and send periodic photo/video updates <br/>4. Airport pickup at PDX, pay adoption fee, receive medical records, welcome your new family member home!<br/><br/>Timeline: 2-4 weeks for CDC/USDA paperwork and flight arrangement once approved.<br/><br/><br/>$650 Adoption Fee includes all of the following:<br/>- Flight to Oregon, USDA import permit, Screwworm Health Certificate<br/>- Spay/neuter, core vaccines (DHLPPi, Rabies, Bordetella). Flea/tick/heartworm treatment & deworming.<br/>- Blood work & health tests (CBC, blood parasite tests, parvo/giardia/coronavirus test). <br/>- Grooming. Microchip. Collar, leash & ID tag.<br/><br/>Payment methods accepted: Venmo, PayPal, Zelle, or cash<br/><br/>The Meximutt Project is 100% volunteer-run by a small team of dedicated animal lovers. We cannot respond to every application due to high volume, but if we think there's a good match, we'll reach out.
