Darla's Story

Meet Darla.

Darla is a 7 year old Terrier mix who never expected to find herself in a shelter. After spending her entire life with the person she loved, she lost the only home she had ever known when her owner became physically unable to care for her.

As if that wasn't enough of an adjustment, Darla is also deaf, making the shelter an especially confusing place. She can't hear the reassuring voices around her or understand why her world suddenly changed. Right now, she's doing her best to make sense of it all.

Despite her worries, Darla remains an incredibly sweet girl. More than anything, she wants to be close to her people. If there's a lap available, Darla fully intends to sit in it, and she refuses to acknowledge the fact that she weighs 44 pounds. In her mind, she's the perfect size for cuddling.

Darla is happiest with gentle companionship, soft places to rest, and people who will make her feel safe again. She can do well with an easygoing dog, but what she truly longs for is a quiet home where she can finally relax and leave her shelter stress behind.

Darla has already lost so much. What she needs now is someone willing to open their heart, offer a comfortable lap, and show her that she is home again.

*Reminder* We are currently facilitating adoptions through appointment only. If you arrive at the shelter without an appointment to meet a dog, we may not be able to assist you.

Please call the shelter (516-869-6311) during working hours (Mon. to Fri. 9AM-4PM; Sat. 10AM-4PM) for more information about this dog, the adoption process at the shelter, and to confirm availability.
