Dante's Story
Meet Dante!

When Dante was first reported running near a busy street, he was in terrible shape—frightened, emaciated, injured, and limping after apparently being hit by a car. He had been on his own for some time and, despite his condition, continued to stay on the run. Eventually, he was safely trapped and rushed for medical care. He was desperately thin and injured, and he simply would not have survived much longer without help.

That was in July. Today, Dante is on the road to recovery, and his foster mom has fallen completely in love with this sweet, gentle boy. His recovery has been slow, but so has been his transformation. Dante is gaining weight, gaining confidence, and slowly discovering what it feels like to be cared for. He is still timid and startles easily—and considering everything he has experienced, that's understandable. He is head-shy, but with patience and encouragement, he will seek out attention, although an unexpected noise or movement can still send him looking for a safe place.

Inside the house, he is gradually becoming more comfortable. He's housetrained and kennel trained, food motivated, and learning that a home is a good place to be. Toys haven't really caught his attention yet, but we're not worried about that. Right now, we're celebrating the fact that Dante is learning to relax.

Dante has also done fabulous meeting other dogs outside his foster home. He doesn't currently live with another dog, but his interactions with dogs have been very positive. He also met a cat and was curious enough to sniff—but when the cat gave him a swat, Dante took the hint and left the cat alone. He didn't try again and gave the cat plenty of space. We think he may be cat workable with the right introduction.

Because of the injury to his leg, Dante isn't looking for a hiking partner. His ideal life is much quieter: a comfortable couch, a peaceful home, and a person who doesn't expect him to go-go-go. He's slowly learning leash manners and becoming more comfortable riding in the car, but long walks aren't in his future until his leg completely heals.

What Dante really needs is patience, kindness, and time. He would do best in a quiet, adult home without children where he can continue building confidence at his own pace. He doesn't need someone to "fix" him. He needs someone willing to show him, day after day, that he is finally safe. Dante has already survived the hardest part. Now he's learning how wonderful life can be. Every day Dante takes a step forward, and we know better days are ahead for this sweet, 2-year-old boy!
