She was adopted into a home for four years and then returned to us for no fault of her own.

Dakota had back and heart surgeries 4 years ago and did pretty well with them. She still has that kind of "drunk walk" going on from the back surgery, but doesn't let it slow her down at all. She does wear diapers because she has slowly lost control of her bladder and bowels. She holds it in until she gets excited and then it just comes out...she does really well in the diapers; and she stands still and lets you put them on without a fuss. And she has a whole wardrobe of them. We just line them with a half of a maxi-pad and change them out. During the day when foster mom is at work Dakota hangs out in a big pen so she doesn't have to wear the diaper all day.

She seems to get along well with dogs that aren’t overly aggressive with her…her foster home has 3 other dogs, and she tries to play with them (they are old or crippled) and gets along fine. Occasionally, they grouse at each other, but foster mom hasn’t seen anyone get into it. They just make noises at each other and then go their separate ways. That's saying something with one of her little Alpha turds! We have no idea how she will do with a pup that is a little bigger than her, but that's why we do home visits! :-)

Her one main expense (besides the maxi-pads) is that she is on heart meds. She had to have a balloon valvuloplasty (BVP) to help fix a valve in her heart when she was younger, which also helped with her heart murmur. The meds aren't terribly expensive, but she does have to have them twice a day. Good news is with her back condition she can't move around fast enough to cause her heart further complications. She entertains herself playing with toys and running around the living room and dining room playing with toys and wishing someone here would play with her...we did just have x-rays and an echocardiogram done and they came back and said her heart had made really good improvements! They were very happy with how her heart looked. :-) Which means we are very happy with how her heart looks!

One of Dakota's other little quirks is that she sounds like she is ready to kill her food bowl while she is eating. She doesn't seem to be consistently food aggressive, but foster mom has been feeding her slightly away from, but with, the other pups. She has been fine, and foster mom has been working on incorporating her nearer to the other pups. She finishes first and likes to walk around and watch everyone else eat but doesn't try to get their food or act aggressively towards them, so foster mom think she's just "weirdly loud" when she's eating. She has gotten "testy" with foster mom once when she was eating, but foster mom just continued to feed her near the other pups, but away from the commotion and she has been doing great. Foster mom thinks Dakota just needs her own "safe space" to eat in. It may be tied to her not feeling like she has the same abilities as the rest of the pups, so she wants to make sure no one is taking advantage of her while she is in a vulnerable state.

Dakota is a mix of some sort, so she is a little taller than most regular dachshunds. She is as sweet as can be around the other pups in the house, and they are a pretty eclectic mix. One is in a wheelchair, one has dementia and wanders aimlessly, and one can be pretty aggressive (the joys of working in rescue...you fall in love with the strangest mix of dogs! LOL).

We had her get x-rays and the echo done to make sure she could get spayed. With all her other surgeries she did not get spayed that last time she was in our care. It was the least important surgery with all that she faced. Now that time has passed, and she has healed (and healed well!!), she actually has the ability to get her final surgery done and not have to go through any more heat cycles, either. That will be done in another 2 weeks.

As Dakota improves and finishes up her surgery schedules, we will continue to update her write ups and her conditions with you. She has been through so much already in her short little life, she is ready to be pampered and loved for the quirky, sweet, odd little bird that she is. If you are ready to laugh out loud every day and be loved like you’ve never been loved before, please consider opening your heart and home to this amazing little girl.

If you want to help with this dog’s medical expenses:
https://therescuedrescuers.org/how-to-help

If you want to adopt this dog, apply at the link!
https://therescuedrescuers.org/adoption-application
