Daisy's Story

This is Daisy. She came to the South Kingstown Animal Shelter (401-789-5515) on 3/19/2026. She was found in West Kingston by the train station. As you can see, she is in rough shape. She is way too skinny. You can see her ribs and hip bones. It appears that she has been used to make puppies. She has sores on her joints - like pressure sores or fecal/urine burns which may result if an animal is kept in a soiled environment like a filthy dog crate. The tip of her tail indicates that she has banged her tail on a wall or side of a crate and has caused it to bleed. She is timid and acts suspicious of some things. In an attempt to show her that hands are okay, I began to hand feed her food. I soak her chicken free dog food and allow it to become spongy, then I take 1 piece out at a time and have her take it from my hand. This took about three days to decrease her hesitancy. Daisy is going to be a project. She will need someone who is willing to work with a dog that does not know what it is to have stability or kindness. In her state, I suspect that she is not used to a clean environment or routine feeding. It appears that she has never had vet care until she came to the shelter. We have seen her goofy side and she acts like a young kicking foal bucking her way to receiveing lots of body scratches. She loves treats but they need to be chicken free. She has made progress, but she is going to need more. When Daisy arrived, she went straight to the vet to obtain a complete physical and documentation of her condition. She weighed less than 31 pounds. She had bloodwork, stool sample check, a rabies vaccination, and was put on antibiotics. Her 2nd appointment was a week later and she gained 3 pounds. Her 3rd appointment which followed 10 days later, showed that she gained another 7 pounds. She also received her distemper vaccination. She has been hanging out with the staff. She needs sunscreen applied to her nose and face because she sunburns very easily. She began playing with toys. She is gaining weight, receiving baths, and playing with toys. Her fur is brighter and her sores are becoming less visible. At the South Kingstown Animal Shelter (401-789-5515), she is slowly making progress. She will require work because her life has not been easy, we just hope that we have her on the best possible path for success!
