Cupid's Story

PLEASE PROVIDE A PHONE NUMBER WITH YOUR INQUIRY. Note: preference will be given to working/herding situations, ranches, farms, large acreages, horseback homes, and agility/trial homes.

Meet "Cupid," a five-month-old Lab/BC female, crate & leash trained. Super sweet & very smart. Appears she will have long hair.

Cupid is from a litter of five that was dumped out in the Idaho countryside to fend for themselves. We do not know much about Cupid yet. She seems to be fairly well-socialized to humans and does great with other dogs. She is up to date on all her shots including rabies, is wormed, spayed, and chipped.

She was presented to us by the shelter as being 5 months old and an Aussie/BC cross. We think she is closer to six months old. She will be a larger, medium-sized dog—maybe 50 pounds. Her feet are pretty big.

Cupid knows nothing at this point and is not housebroke. Shee is just a big, happy puppy oblivious to anything but food, water and puppy play. She is used to living outside.

Aussies are generally intelligent, hard working, and versatile. They are no-nonsense dogs who thrive in a home where their brains and energy are put to good use. You don't have to keep a flock of sheep if you live with an Aussie — although it doesn't hurt — but you do have to keep him busy. Aussies are a high-energy breed so research them carefully before committing to owning one.

All stock dogs need lots of mental and physical stimulation to be happy and to stay out of trouble. A short walk around the block is not going to be sufficient. Heelers do best when they have a ''job'' to do which occupies most of their day. This can be herding livestock, horseback riding, hiking in the mountains or on the beach, mountain biking, playing extended games of fetch, or agility games.

As a breed Australian Shepherds can be very destructive and bark for long periods if they're not getting the exercise and mental stimulation they need.
Aussies will alert bark to warn you if they see or hear something suspicious, and will protect their family and home with a surprising fierceness. This herding dog's pushiness with livestock can carry over into the home and, with a timid or inexperienced owner, he may assume the dominant role in the family. The breed needs a firm and confident owner — Aussies probably aren't a good choice if you've never had a dog before. Aussies enjoy the company of their family and prefer to stick close to their human pack. They don't do well stuck in the backyard by themselves for long periods. Aussies are by nature standoffish with people they don't know, and unless they have regular exposure to lots of different people — ideally beginning in puppyhood — they can become fearful of strangers. This may lead to biting out of fear and aggression. Give your Aussie lots of contact with friends, family, neighbors, and even strangers to help him polish his social skills.

This dog is available through Herd U Needed A Home Rescue http://www.herduneededahome.com and currently lives near Bend, OR.
