Cowboy Caviar's Story

A famous cowboy used to say, "Courage is being scared to death and saddling up anyway." Cowboy Caviar agrees. As a 1.5 year old stray in the Hill Country, he was picked up on June 24, 2025. He then rode into our care during the devastating floods a few weeks later. Just one month into his time at APA he was let out of his kennel and seriously injured during the late night break-in. He's still got the scars on his face, but his resolve and fun-loving personality remain unscathed. This brave, trusting, resilient boy is just waiting to give you all the love he deserves in return.

Even though he's been through a lot, Cowboy Caviar keeps saddling up and doing the work. He's been building his skills for the day he rides off into the sunset with you. He's currently enrolled in APA's Canine Good Citizen Program, which is modeled after the AKC's Canine Good Citizen Test. As a CGC trainee, he has learned sit, down, wait/stay until told 'free', recall, and place. He's also learning to sit and appropriately greet strangers and to allow handling for grooming and vet visits. He has good leash walking skills and checks in well with his handler. He's very treat motivated and eager to please, so maintaining his training is made that much easier.

Don't worry, though, he's not all work and no play. He's always up for a long sniff walk, a good run, a game of tug, playing in a kiddie pool, chasing a big ball around a yard, or relaxing and gnawing on one of his favorite long-lasting chews. And he's not too picky either. He's very much a go with the flow kind of guy.

What kind of set up does he need?
*Cowboy doesn't ask for much, but he would prefer to be the only dog and have you all to himself.
* A house with a fenced yard would be ideal, but he could do a less busy apartment if no elevator is needed.
* He has not lived with children, but those 10 and up could possibly work.

One thing is for certain. With his goofball personality and big heart, Cowboy Caviar will liven up your day with joy, laughter and love and gladly hangout by your side. He's happy to follow your lead. Why not come meet him and lead him home?
