Here's what his current family has to say about Leo...

Our home and family are no longer the best fit for Leo. He developed storm anxiety a year ago and began escaping under the weak spots in the chain link fence surrounding our one-acre property. He never bothered the fence prior to this. After injuring himself while trying to escape during a storm, we began bringing him inside when needed. Unfortunately, he is still anxious inside. He broke out of two wire crates as well as damaged our bathroom when we put him in there as an alternative. He is better when he can be loose with people for comfort during a storm, but someone is not always available to be with him as we have a newborn, two other small children, and my husband works an hour away. Our vet gave us some medication to use during storms, but we cannot afford to use it as frequently as we have storms. As such, we can't leave our home without checking the forecast and then worrying what will happen if a storm pops up unexpectedly. This is not sustainable for us or fair to Leo.

Leo has been seen by Dr. Jerry Latham and is currently on heartworm prevention and is up-to-date on vaccinations.
Leo is heartworm positive; Dr. Latham recommended the slow kill method via Leo's monthly prevention medication.
Leo has storm anxiety that may require medication.

Storm anxiety is the primary behavior issue for Leo. He will pant, pace, drool, and try to escape confinement during a storm or if one is passing nearby. If a person can sit and pet him, he will generally lay down at their feet.
Resource guarding is perhaps a potential behavior issue. He has not shown any resource guarding with our older dog who lives in the house, but I make a point to always feed them separately so as to not create the situation for the behavior to develop. I have seen him snap at a chicken who approached his food bowl outside, though.
He will bark and be protective of our property which aligns with his breed's traits. He barks at unfamiliar dogs and people who walk down the road outside our fence, but he is friendly with people once we introduce him. While not a behavior issue for us, an adopter should be aware of this.
He overall does well with letting us know when he needs to go potty outside by walking to the door, but he has had a couple accidents or marked a corner before.

Leo is very affectionate, gentle, and laid back when he is not experiencing storm anxiety. He loves belly rubs. He is comfortable around children, though his size can be a bit much for young children if he gets the zoomies. He is from working livestock guardian parents and has experience with goats and chickens.

Here are some things that LEO is looking for...
A home that will allow him to stay inside with his people where he will feel most secure, especially during inclement/stormy weather
Fenced yard so he can run and play safely when outside
A home that will give him lots of grace, patience, love, and attention.

Things to know about LEO:
Leo has severe storm anxiety and would do best with a person or family where there is someone around the majority of the time.
Leo is great with cats, dogs, and all people, including kids
He is very affectionate and gentle and unless experiencing anxiety, Leo has a laid-back personality.

A home and/or vet check and rehoming fee will be required to adopt LEO.

Please note the Humane Society of West Alabama is not liable for the behavior of courtesy listing dogs. The HSWA does not foster or hold any rights to this animal. Adoption is at the sole discretion of the contact/current owner.
