Connor's Story

Calix is a 5-year-old shepherd mix, and he weighs about 70 lbs. He is super sweet and polite; however, he does get anxious sometimes and is still learning his manners and impulse control. He is great at learning new tricks and has already improved on a lot of his manners at home, chicken is one of his favorite motivators for this training.

He is friendly and curious with almost everyone, but he has barked and growled at people who try to hug or lay down next to his owner, he also doesn’t love being hugged himself. He isn’t excessively reactive on his leash, and he has been polite with most dogs he has met on leash, but he has also gotten aggressive extremely quickly on one incident, so he never meets other dogs unless they’re a few feet away and never off leash with other dogs. Seeing other dogs can also make him anxious on walks and he’ll start pulling and whining, walking him in less busy areas and keeping him distracted helps. When he gets overly excited or anxious at home he usually calms down after a timeout in a different room or in his crate, treats or heavy scolding usually just make him more excited when he’s in this mood.

Overall, he is a fun and chill guy who just needs some extra attention to act his best. Recommending he go to a home with no other animals in a quieter neighborhood, he would probably like a yard, but he has been doing ok staying in a small apartment as well. He is super easy to hang out with at home and when he’s not anxious he is perfect on walks as well.

Connor is neutered, microchipped and up to date on his vaccines.

Please contact us if you are interested in adopting, or even fostering, one of our dogs. We are a federal non-profit rescue. We do require a completed application and a home visit prior to adopting.
