Colt's Story
Sheltie lovers, meet Colt!

Colt is a purebred Shetland Sheepdog, rescued from a puppy mill with over 420 other dogs. His ear is not folded: he has cauliflower ear from a neglected ear infection from the puppy mill.

He is middle aged, and spent his whole life in solitude, confined to a concrete pen, with only the company of other breeding dogs.

He fears human touch, and is very skittish. When they would move him around, they would pin him and carry him by the scruff of his neck. To Colt, hands were a symbol of pain and unkindness. Like most shelties, though, he is smart and curious. He has been learning that hands now offer treats and gentleness, and has been eating from the volunteers' hands. He even occasionally does happy dances and barks when excited to see you.

He comes out of his shell more and more every day, but is a project dog. His adopter needs to be determined, giving him patience and as much time as it takes for him to learn how to be a dog. Before his rescue, he had never even worn a collar. Basic skills like walking on leash, pottying outside, and being loved on are all new to him.

He does get along with most other dogs though, and does especially well with the ladies. He would benefit from a home that has a confident female dog that could show him the ropes.

Due to Colt's history, he needs a stable, adult-only home, with a secure fenced yard and experience with anxious dogs. We do offer out of state adoption, with transport at adopter's expense.

>> To apply to adopt Colt, please apply at herdinghomerescue.com/adopt

NOTE: we do NOT accept inquiries through petfinder.
