Cocoa's Story

Accepting applications at Duffysfriends.org from Rochester. NY . Profile written 12/23/25. She arrived 12/03/25 and is now spayed and ready for a loving family.

Backstory: Cocoa was born in Georgia in April, her mother was a Maltese Poodle mix. All of the puppies looked like the mother except Cocoa and the owner could not sell her. She gave her to a young girl who was barely out of highschool. The young owner recently moved back to her home in Rochester in October 2025. She was living in the basement, with her two cats and Cocoa, at a relatives house. She surrendered Cocoa because she could not housebreak her and kept Cocoa in a cage in the basement.

Now the sweet story: We accepted Cocoa into our program and we had her housebroken within a week. She is very good but as it should be with a 8 month old dog, letting her out with routine, using a crate when you are out of the home is the successful path to success. She is very smart!

We were lucky and were able to get her spayed 12/18/25 and she has all her vaccinations and tested Negative for heartworm and tick diseases.

She is such a lovely little girl at 10 lbs and is very smart. She is a warrior to live thru her first home. We are so proud of her and her resume reads well.

She was brought up with 4 year old child
She was also living with 2 cats
She rides nice in a car - just need to have a car seat or carrier so she does not wander into your driving space.

She loves dogs and plays with two at her foster home. Having another playful dog in the home would be beneficial for her exercise. She will play fetch and bring the toy back to you to throw. She truly is a happy girl and will make a good walking dog. She looks to be a terrier breed such as Yorkshire, Australian terrier, Cairn and we know her mom was a Maltese Poo. Her hair coat will be soft will be with minimum shedding. She loves her foster home and she will quickly bond to you as well. We think she should have a crate in the bedroom so she can be with you at night. Her prior owner had a crate near her bed.

Donation request is $425.00 and includes all vetting from our vet in Rochester. She will need a second booster vaccination in January for distemper/parvo.

Our application is our next step for a meet up at the foster home. PLEASE follow this link to complete our online application. The button on Petfinder does not take you to our application. Go to Duffysfriends.org

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you!

Duffy's Friends Inc.'s Adoption Policy
Duffy's Friends adoption process: We believe in matching pets to families and we accept applications. We review the application and if we think it's a match we will call you immediately. We do not ship dogs long distances so the home must be within driving distance of Rochester, New York. We do require a fenced yard with physical fencing on all sides that is in good shape and connected. No electric fence or boundary training. Children should be 12 years old minimum if they are living in the home with our pet. A long history of owning a dog in your name is very important. Finally, homeownership is a must and we do validate this information by reviewing the tax roles to find the owner of the property. We can not adopt to apartments, condos, or townhomes due to the fenced yard requirement. Dogs under 6 lbs will be considered for a no fenced lifestyle.
