Cocoa's Story

Meet Cocoa!

Cocoa is a sweet, sensitive 1-year-old Mastiff who weighs around 90 pounds and is learning that the world isn't such a scary place after all.

When Cocoa was picked up from the shelter, she was so frightened that she cowered at the back of her kennel and needed treats and patience just to convince her to come forward. But underneath all that fear was an affectionate girl waiting to feel safe. By the end of her very first day in foster care, Cocoa was already snuggled up on the couch with her foster family's daughters.

As Cocoa has settled in, more and more of her personality has started to shine. She loves playing fetch and has a favorite green rope ball that she'll happily chase again and again. She also enjoys a good game of tug and already knows Sit and Drop It. She has wonderful house manners, has had only one accident in her foster home, and usually needs nothing more than a gentle "uh-uh" to redirect her if she gets curious about something she shouldn't.

Cocoa currently lives with an older female dog and does very well with her. In fact, having a calm, confident canine companion seems to help Cocoa feel more secure. The girls can be left home together for a few hours without trouble.

Her biggest challenge is confidence. Cocoa is still fearful of unfamiliar people and dogs and will need an adopter who understands that her world should expand gradually rather than all at once. She appears especially unsure around men and is taking longer to become comfortable with her foster dad. With patience, however, she is making wonderful progress. She now greets him with tail wags and play bows, takes treats from his hand, and has even begun approaching him for pets and chin scratches when he is sitting or lying down.

Cocoa is also discovering that some everyday experiences aren't so bad. She handles baths beautifully, although she is still uncomfortable having her feet handled and is working toward being comfortable with nail trims. Stairs are another work in progress: she can go up them, but steep stairs going down are still a little too intimidating.

At home, Cocoa is affectionate, playful, gentle and eager to please. She would thrive with a patient family willing to continue helping her build confidence at her own pace. A securely fenced yard where she can enjoy her beloved games of fetch would be wonderful, and a calm, confident dog may be a great companion for her.

Most of all, Cocoa needs people who will give her time. Once she feels safe, this once-terrified shelter girl becomes a couch-snuggling, tail-wagging sweetheart who clearly wants to trust. She just needs a family willing to show her that she can.

Cocoa will be spayed soon and is expected to be ready for adoption by mid-October.
PLEASE NOTE: GPMR communicates primarily by email.
