Clover's Story

Meet Clover: professional shadow, tiny herding supervisor, and firm believer in personal boundaries.

Clover is a smart, quirky, curious girl looking for a patient home that will let her build trust at her own pace. She's the kind of dog who will follow you everywhere, supervise everything you do, give you kisses, and make herself a very important part of your daily routine.

Touching her, however, requires approval from management.

Clover came to Stella's Rescue with her sister Cricket after we pulled them from euthanasia. Both girls arrived incredibly scared of people, but Clover has slowly decided that humans might actually be pretty great.

She follows us around the farm like we've bathed in hot dog water. She'll come close, give kisses, investigate what we're doing, and happily involve herself in everyone's business. Reach down to pet her before she's ready, though, and she's gone.

Clover is also a Heeler/Terrier mix, and occasionally her genetics take over. One of her favorite hobbies is attempting to herd my husband by nipping at his heels. She isn't trying to hurt him. She's simply decided that his movements around the farm require significantly more supervision.

She's funny, clever, active, independent, and incredibly entertaining.

Clover currently has more freedom than basically any other animal at Stella's. She happily moves between indoors and outside and very much enjoys having a say in where she'd like to be. Close a door and take away that freedom? Clover will immediately file a formal complaint at approximately 115 decibels.

Clover's perfect home:

• Patient people who understand shy or fearful dogs
• Someone willing to let trust happen on Clover's timeline
• A home that appreciates a smart, quirky, independent personality
• People who don't need instant cuddles to know they're loved
• Someone who will celebrate the little milestones with her
• A family looking for a dog who will make them laugh every single day

Clover isn't the dog who will meet you and immediately climb into your lap. She's the dog who might make you work for it.

But that's also what makes her special.

One day you'll realize she's following you everywhere. Then she's standing a little closer. Then she's giving you kisses. And eventually, you might earn the ultimate Clover achievement: permission to touch the Clover.

We knew when we saved Clover and Cricket that they might be with us for a while. We accepted that when we chose to give them the chance they deserved.

But "a while" doesn't have to mean forever.

If you're the patient person willing to let Clover choose you at her own pace, submit an adoption application to Stella's Rescue in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Stella's Rescue's Adoption Policy
Our goal is to ensure every animal is placed in a safe, stable, loving, and lifelong home. We encourage people who are interested in adopting to participate in our3 week "Foster to Adopt" period. This allows both the human and the animal to see if they are going to be a great and loving long term match. We want to remove the pressure some people face to keep an animal out of obligation, instead of being a great match. If it's not working out, no worries. We are happy to have them come back to us and hope the foster parents will help us advocate and find their perfect match.
