CLEATUS's Story

Cleatus arrived just a few weeks ago as a terrified stray, and only now are we starting to see cracks in that timid shell. Little pieces of the real Cleatus are shining through and it is heartbreaking to think that a dog as gentle as he is ended up here at all. When Cleatus arrived, it was immediately clear that he had been deeply loved at some point. He was already neutered and morbidly obese which tells us someone not only cared enough to provide veterinary care, but also doted on him so much that his weight got dangerously out of control. Since coming to the shelter our staff and volunteers have been working hard to help him reach a healthier place. Right now, Cleatus can barely exercise without over exerting himself. Once he loses the weight we believe he will actually be a small to medium sized boy who can move comfortably, play and live without pain. He deserves to know what it feels like to run and breathe easily again. Cleatus does not seem to have been taught how to walk on a leash, so his new family will need to continue working with him on this. While leash walking is still new to him, we have learned that he absolutely loves being outside in a fenced yard. He enjoys sniffing and exploring at his own slow pace. He recently joined a multi dog play group and it was clear he wanted to play but simply could not keep up physically. He was gentle with every dog he met. More than anything, Cleatus is soft. He is gentle. And he absolutely melts for belly rubs. He will flop over and throw his belly at anyone who looks like they might give him a little love. Cleatus needs a home that loves him for his kindness and is committed to helping him through his weight loss journey. On the other side of that journey is a dog who will finally be able to play, enjoy walks and even do something as simple as scratch his own ears. We promise this sweet boy is worth every bit of the effort. Cleatus is estimated to be around 5 years old. All animals adopted from Huntsville Animal Services are microchipped, appropriately vaccinated, spayed/neutered and given a 30 day flea/tick preventative. Ready to meet Cleatus? Stop by 4950 Triana Blvd SW in Huntsville, Alabama. No appointment is necessary to meet our available animals. All adopters must be 19 years or older and be able to provide a valid ID.
