Chiquis's Story

Chiquis
10 years | Female | Microchipped | Spayed | Vaccinated | Housebroken | 5 pounds | Housebroken | Gets along with other dogs | She is a character and loves being cuddled | Located in Pomona, CA

Available to foster please complete our foster application at https://www.gunterslegacy.org/foster

Before we bring a dog into Gunter's Legacy we put a lot of thought into it. We think are we the best rescue for this dog at this time for this particular dog. Every one of them pulls at our heartstrings and our conscience. But it's the ones like Chiquis who, after all of the neglect, can still look at a human with her big black eyes and wag her tail like it's a propeller that makes us say how can we say no?

Chiquis came in on July 14 as a stray. It just happened her owners were actually looking for her. They had posted her on Pawboost, and Facebook, they probably also filed a report with Long Beach Animal Care Services, and most likely posted flyers as well. When Chiquis arrived at the shelter, it was clear the neglect she had suffered for years. She was not spayed, so she was probably used for breeding over and over again. Her numerous tumors are evidence of her overbreeding. Her nails were long, her ears have fly strikes on them, her teeth are awful, she has luxating Patelas in both her back legs, and she has a difficult time pooping because there is a huge tumor that prevents her from pooping easily. Yet every time I look at her and I call her name, she slowly walks towards me with her tail wagging so fast you almost forget everything she's going through.

Her owners were contacted, they were offered services to help pay for her medical bills, and they chose to leave her there, knowing that her fate was most likely death. They chose to leave her there, frightened, and alone, and chose to leave her there to die with strangers.

On the post where I saw her first, there were many people on there that were irate and saying such nasty things about the shelter, and that they should have given her back, regardless of the owner's ability to take care of her, because it was her family and the only life she's known. all I can say is shame on them shame for thinking that Chiquis deserves them that family that neglected her and then left her to die.

I wish I had my camera out when I took her out this morning, and she rolled in the grass on her back and for a moment everything was alright. She wandered around with her little tail, wagging the entire time. She sleeps in my room where she makes the cutest little sounds while she's sleeping. However, I've been in Rescue long enough to know that cute little breathing sounds are a sign of more internal problems. We will not know anything until her vet appointment on Tuesday and we are trying to stay positive, and hope that in some way we can help save her. In the back of our minds, we know that she is most likely in hospice, and the veterinarians will not be able to save her.

If after her examination, the veterinarian tells us that she has a chance we are going to need help a lot of help. We are a small rescue and cannot do it alone. If you cannot donate, please consider sharing this post with your friends and ask for donations.

I know some of you are looking at this video and thinking just let her go, but I know if you all met her in person you would say let's do everything we can to prove to her that humans are not all bad, and give her some time to know even just a little happiness and love.

This morning when she pooped I did a happy dance. I know my neighbors think I'm nuts already and I just solidified what they already thought. Sometimes it's the little things that really are momentous and we have to celebrate them.

Venmo at @gunterslegacy

PayPal at info@gunterslegacy.org

Zelle at info@gunterslegacy.org

Gunter's Legacy

PO Box 1214

Claremont, CA 91711

Gunter's Legacy Animal Rescue, Inc.'s Adoption Policy
We are based in Claremont, CA . However, we have adoptable in Northern and Southern California. Please read each description of the animal for their location. You must live in California and within 1.5 hours of where the dog/cat is being fostered. All of our adoptable animals are given a thorough wellness checkup. Senior cats or dogs may receive additional tests, i.e., bloodwork. All receive a fecal, a heartworm test, DHPP, Rabies, Bordetella, and a microchip, and are neutered/spayed. We also provide any additional necessary tests, x-rays, ultrasounds, medications, and consults with specialists and necessary medical procedures. All animals also receive comprehensive dental cleaning and extractions when deemed necessary by our veterinarians. Step 1 - Application Adopter candidates are required to complete and submit an adoption application which will be reviewed by Gunter's Legacy Animal Rescue's Board of Directors. If the application is approved for the first step either a board member and/or the foster of the animal you are interested in will call you for a phone interview. Step 2 - Home Check Once the 1st step has been completed, reviewed, and receives initial approval, we will schedule a mandatory home check. Step 3 - Meet & Greet If the 1st and 2nd step is approved, we will schedule a meet and greet with the potential adopters and dog(s). It is required that all members of the adoptive family must be present for the meet and greet. Step 4 - Pet Introduction If the adopter already has existing pets (dogs or cats), we require all the pets to be properly introduced by a member of Gunter's Legacy Animal Rescue. We will not adopt a dog into a home that has reached its city-mandated limit. All required steps must be completed and approved by the Board of Directors before finalizing the adoption. Adoption Process and Policies: Not all dogs listed on this website are currently available for adoption, each dog's bio will contain its availability We are a small non-profit rescue and we are completely run and operated by unpaid volunteers. We will try as much as possible to return all calls, emails, and statuses. All our dogs once cleared for adoption will be seeking permanent loving homes. Before applying to adopt, please understand we are looking for people and/or families who are ready and willing to commit to a dog for its entire lifespan. This could be up to 20 years. Adoption Requirements:? Adopters must be at least 25 years of age Please consider the age and size of the dog, a dog can live to be in their late teens to 20 years old please be mindful of a dog's age. This policy was thoroughly researched and an attorney and veterinarians were consulted before we wrote this policy.
