What is New Mexico Animal Friends’s adoption process?

Adoption Clinics: Dog adoption clinic: Saturdays (1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month) 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Petco on San Mateo & Academy - 6300 San Mateo NE, Albuquerque Cat adoption clinic: Saturdays 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Petco on San Mateo & Academy - 6300 San Mateo NE, Albuquerque If you are interested in meeting a particular dog or cat at the Saturday adoption clinic, please contact the person listed in that animal's bio to ensure the dog or cat will be attending clinic. Adoption Fees: Dogs: Dogs (7 months and older): $195 Puppies (6 months and younger): $245 Special prices for senior dogs, special needs dogs, and multiple adoptions Cats: Cats (7 months to 10 years): $75 Kittens (6 months and younger): $95 Special needs cats, cats over 10 years: $40 Special prices for adopting 2 cats Adoptions Include: All dogs and cats are spayed/neutered, microchipped and up-to-date on basic vaccinations prior to adoption. Dogs are tested for heartworm and put on preventative. Cats are tested for feline leukemia and FIV. All adopters receive a free check-up by one of our participating veterinarians within the first two weeks after adopting. We will be happy to loan you any equipment you might need to get off to a good start with your new companion. Adoption Process: You will be asked to fill out an adoption application and one of our adoption assistants will interview you. The process takes between 30 minutes and 1 hour. Applications are available at the adoption clinics, or you can email us through Petfinder to request one. Home Visits: Home visits are required for all adoptions. Special arrangements for adopters out of Albuquerque must be made in advance, but out-of-town adoptions may not be possible. If you live outside of Albuquerque, please call the NMAF Cat Coordinator at (505)350-7463 or the NMAF office (for dogs) at (505)881-7297 (Tue. - Fri., 8:00 - 12:00) to ask about an out-of-town home visit before traveling to Albuquerque to attend an adoption clinic. Returns: If within two weeks the adoption is not working out, you may return the animal to NMAF and you will get a refund minus a $15 administrative fee. After two weeks there is no refund. The adoption contract requires that the dog or cat be returned to NMAF if the adoption does not work out for any reason.
