CHESNEY's Story

A DOG WHO HAS A HEART FOR ONLY HIS PERSON

Chesney was living in swamp country. It is unclear how he got there but he fended for himself between two swamps near the Yakama Indian Reservation for several weeks before he was taken into safety by a Good Samaritan who contacted us for help.

It did not take long to figure out that Chesney is not your ordinary dog.

Initially we thought he might be an Australian Shepherd mix, with his gorgeous lush coat and curious half tail but we quickly changed our minds. Chesney's way about him is less like a stock herding dog and more like a stock guarding dog. He is stoic and skeptical, bold and unafraid of a challenge. He walks calmly up to strangers and is not the least bit afraid to stare them straight in the eye and usually is the last to look away. His body language is different than that of other dogs and is tough to read if you have never spent any time around livestock guarders. He wants to be near but does not seem to need attention or affection yet he will sit forever, with his head in your lap, if you are feeling upset and out of sorts. He is intuitive and aware, independent and loyal. He is not a dog for somebody looking for cuddles and snuggles but a great dog for somebody looking for loyal companionship, and protection. He is not aggressive but there is no doubt in our minds, he would not hesitate to give his life for someone he loved.

Chesney is good with other dogs and wants to protect them as well. Since he is bold and unafraid, he would not mix well with another dog like him but does great with dogs who allow him to be guardian and leader. He views kitties as prey so is not a good choice for a home that likes feline friendships.

If we could pick the ideal home for Chesney, it would be a place with some property and a solitary person looking for canine companionship. It would be somebody with livestock guarding dog experience and the ability to instill leadership in the human/canine partnership and perhaps teach him how to use his genetic talents. Chesney is very food driven and motivated but is also very independent in his thought process so creativity, patience and perseverance will go a long way in furthering his education. He would make an awesome hiking, camping, boating, fishing, nature loving buddy or a great ranch farm dog, though we have not tested him with chickens and smaller barnyard animals.

Chesney will crate quietly while you are away from home and crates quietly at night as well. It was obvious when we got him, that he had been an outdoor dog but he has learned to appreciate the comforts of indoor living and laying at the feet of his person. He does not suffer from separation anxiety but does love to go with his person for car rides and walks and adventures as often as allowed. He will meet life head on and with a no nonsense point of view. To the one he gives his heart to, he will offer unparalleled companionship, security, understanding and unconditional acceptance, day, night, rain, shine 24/7-365.

Chesney is about two years old and currently weighs 65 lbs. He loves to be brushed and has a coat that naturally repels mud and dirt but still needs a good brushing now and then, more, during shedding season. He is a quiet dog who saves barking for serious business. If Chesney is barking at something, you better go and see what is going on.

For the right person, he will be that dog of a lifetime and we intend to find that person for him. His foster has said she wishes she could keep him because he is so easy to be around and so giving of himself but alas, as most fosters, there are already too many furry family members loafing around and she knows Chesney would like the dog to human ratio to be to closer to one on one, not one on fifteen.

If you would like to meet this beautiful and extraordinary dog, please go to our website at www.allmuttsgreatandsmall.org and click on "Adoption". Once there you will find our adoption application and you can tell us why you think Chesney needs to be in your life. He is an incredibly special guy who deserves an incredibly special life. Tell us how you will give that to him

Chesney is neutered, up to date on five way and rabies vaccinations, microchipped and fecal tested free of parasites. He is an unusual, awesome, once in a lifetime dog for the right person. Maybe that person is you.

His adoption fee is $275
