Chaucer's Story
Chaucer

Chaucer is a philosopher and would be a poet if he had thumbs and could write.

Chaucer is an 11 year old neutered male Brussels Griffon. His owners in the past stated that he was a purebred boy, but since he has no official paperwork we will call him a mix. Chaucer weighs about 20 pounds, and he has long legs, so he doesn’t fit the typical Brussels Griffon figure, but many of us tend to lose our figures as we age. We won’t hold it against him. Chaucer had a fabulous Brussels Griffon beard when he was adopted (see photo #1), but his adopted Mom chose to keep him trimmed. He’s still a little salty about that.

Chaucer’s personality is that of a strong willed senior college professor who has assigned a paper and won’t give you any extra time to complete it after the due date. However, when not being stubborn, Chaucer is a funny guy with a lot going for him. He likes people and other dogs, but he prefers to be the one in charge. We aren’t sure about cats, so that would need to be tested on an individual basis.

Chaucer likes to go out in public and meet people. He enjoys walks and behaves wonderfully on a leash. Chaucer understands basic commands, but he sometimes pretends he doesn’t speak your language or can’t hear you so he doesn’t have to obey. You have to be smarter than this guy to get him to cooperate on a daily basis! His Mom frequently realized that he understood a command she had never used, so she would use it until he decided he didn’t want to remember it anymore and stopped obeying.

Chaucer is a great dog, and he’s had some sadness in his life. Three of his owners have now died and left him to find a new home. His most recent Mom, who adored him, just passed away unexpectedly. They were together for the last 6 years of his life, and he is sad that she isn’t with him any longer.

Chaucer is looking for a new home to retire and spend his golden years. His Mom was a retired English/Theater teacher and was able to spend the majority of her time with him, so he now prefers this arrangement. He would consider a home with people who had to be gone during daylight hours. Although he is able to be crated, he pretends he doesn’t know what he is being told to do. Once crated, Chaucer usually settles down once he acknowledges that he isn’t the one in charge.

Chaucer isn’t a spring chicken, but he acts like he’s still a suave young dog. He has good energy for whatever his humans want to do, whether that’s a walk or a drive. He’s great in the car, and he is willing to go with his family on long trips. He is good in dog friendly restaurants, and he doesn’t beg for food once he understands you’re not falling for his big eyes and charm.

Do you think you would be the perfect family for Chaucer?
