Charcoal is a truly special soul—definitely not your typical Lab mix. He’s a shy, gentle, and a bit of a quirky guy who moves through the world at his own soft pace.<br/><br/>He is exceptionally sweet, calm, and quiet. In fact, I’ve yet to hear him bark or whine. He never jumps up on people, and while he’s not the type to rush to the door to greet you, he does enjoy being close enough for gentle pets without ever being clingy. He’s perfectly content lounging beside you on the couch, watching TV, and simply existing in your company.<br/><br/>Charcoal is respectful in the home—he doesn’t chew things up when left alone and is largely housebroken. He hasn’t quite mastered going out through the dog door yet, though he confidently comes in through it. He’s learning that he’s allowed to ask to go outside, even if he does it in the most subtle, polite way.<br/><br/>He’s wonderfully stoic about loud, sudden noises like fireworks or thunder, but the unpredictability of wind makes him uneasy. The sound of my wind chimes sends him to his safe space—just one of Charcoal’s endearing contradictions.<br/><br/>Routine and consistency help him feel secure. The world can be overwhelming for a dog still figuring out where he fits, and Charcoal prefers to avoid conflict and to go with the flow. He will need time, patience, and understanding as he adjusts to new environments and expectations.<br/><br/>He gains confidence from having another friendly dog around and is naturally a follower. That said, over the past few months he’s been learning that he can be comfortable as an only dog, too. He also seems to like children—especially calm, gentle ones—and often finds them less intimidating than adults.<br/><br/>In many ways, Charcoal is a cat in a dog’s body: quiet, observant, independent, and easy to live with—but more eager to please. He could thrive in an apartment or a home with a small yard, and with patience, he’ll likely learn to enjoy easygoing walks.<br/><br/>Charcoal is looking for someone who wants simple, peaceful companionship—someone patient, kind, and willing to accept him exactly as he is.
