Caygeon's Story
French Bulldog | 6-7 yrs | Male | Owner Surrender
*We cannot guarantee breed nor age.

Temperament: Affectionate, Smart, Cool.
Activity level: He is not hyper and does not require a lot of exercise or activity. Caygeon is not a flight risk.
Vetting: Core vaccines (dh2pp, Rabies). Neutered, microchipped, dewormed, fecal - negative. On heartworm/flea and tick prevention. Caygeon has allergies so will need his ongoing allergy medication, medicated baths and special hypoallergenic food continued. Vet noted: “brachycephalic syndrome, with a fair amount of stertorous breathing”. They took some extra precautions with his anesthesia due to his special neuter “second testicle was very unusual, in that it was located in a secondary 'sac' much further cranial than his normal scrotum”. We had to closely monitor him during his recovery. He is at risk for sudden severe respiratory distress and even potential death so modifications for his safety need to be made. First off someone with French Bulldog experience would be ideal as this is common with the breed. It is also important for his future home to be aware of this, and take precautions such as not over-exercising/over-exerting him, taking care that he doesn't become overheated, limiting stress, and seek urgent medical attention if he ever does go into respiratory distress. There is also the option to have some of these issues addressed surgically, this would require referral to a specialist, and if he's a candidate, could help him to breath much easier.
He has some ongoing skin issues that are doing much better. There are a few residual concerns - his ears are still mildly inflamed with some mild debris. The vet cleaned them out while he was under anesthesia. His facial folds under his eyes were also inflamed and these were cleaned too. Lastly, he has mild dermatitis on his ventral feet, between the central pad and toes, especially his front feet. He was given an injection of Convenia, as this is what he was treated with previously, and his previous culture showed that this was a good choice. Special wipes were dispensed that can be used to clean his feet and folds daily, followed by a medicated cream and weekly baths. His health has improved drastically with this medical protocol and we expect whomever to adopt him will follow it as well. All noted health issues will not be covered under any medical insurance as they are pre-existing.
Housebroken: Yes. Only one accident in foster care.
Good with Dogs: Yes! Caygeon is comfortable with other dogs.
Good with Cats: He chases one of the cats. He has never hurt her and seems to be mostly inquisitive. He would be best suited in a home with dog smart cats or no cats.
Good with Children: Unknown but lived with children in his previous home. He was only surrendered due to the excessive cost of his medical care.
Any noted prey drive: None observed.
How do they respond to the outdoors: He enjoys the outdoors, however is quite happy to be inside with the family. He would do well in a condo or apartment.
Crate Trained: Crate not used in foster care. He does not wander, chew or do destructive things to people or furniture.
Any resource guarding: No resource guarding with the other dog, either food or toys.
Response to commands: Caygeon has good recall and understands simple commands, such as “sit”, “stay”. He is a very clever little dog and will respond to any future training.
Are they vocal: Not vocal at all. Occasional bark, but the French bulldog version of a bark sounds like a squeak!
Leash Etiquette: Caygeon marks EVERYTHING on walks! However, once he has given the clear message to all of the dogs in the neighbourhood that these streets belong to him, he walks very well with minimal stops after that.
Transportation: Caygeon travels very well in the car.
*Caygeon’s bio may change as we get to know him better.
*Comes with 6 weeks of pet insurance plus 2 free online group training classes.
*Due to the number of applications we have been receiving, our team is only able to respond to applicants that will be moving forward as we are an entirely volunteer-run organization.

Meet Caygeon! Underneath that scowling, stern (yet handsome!) face is the personality of a prince. This smart, loving, chilled French Bulldog awaits his perfect home aka ‘palace’. At 6 -7 years of age, he has matured and presents as the ideal dog for the ideal abode. Let’s get right into it: he’s good with other dogs: A+, good with the busy streets: A+, good with housetraining: A+, good with basic commands, A+. Top of the class, your royal highness! While in foster home he will chase one of the kitties, more inquisitive than anything else. A cat free or dog-smart-cat home would be advisable.

Caygeon loves being outside AND inside. He behaves very well on his walks, no pulling or chasing those pesky squirrels. As a perfect pup, he’s not overly hyper so a couple of moderate walks keep him happy. When not outside, he’s more than comfortable chilling on the couch, getting belly rubs or taking a well-deserved nap. He is immensely loyal and no matter where you go, he is there. Not clingy though, it’s just his way of saying he enjoys sharing space with his people. If he’s left by himself he behaves like a true royal canine: no chewing, no barking/whining, no destruction at all. AT. ALL. He doesn’t need a crate and he would do very well in a condo!

Caygeon has shown zero resource guarding and will become very excited with toys, especially the squeaky noisemakers. This is a good way to keep him occupied! In typical, charming Frenchie fashion he will give little grunts, growls, ‘snarlies’, especially when he’s lying on his back awaiting the all-important belly rubs! Grasping the basic commands is a breeze for him, he is extremely smart and catches on quickly. Ongoing training would be an ideal way to build bonds and stimulate his doggie brain.

Caygeon has had a lifelong skin condition according to the records reviewed by the rescue vet. As his foster, caring for him involves daily medication, specialized diet, twice weekly medicated baths and daily foot soaks in medicated shampoo. This routine is necessary while the infected skin is being treated. Once the infection clears, his new family will need to stay observant of his skin condition. This may require more than average trips to the vet, a specialized diet and medications. His daily routine is completely manageable. He responds well to both baths – not thrilled – but completely cooperative. Caygeon also has ‘brachycephalic syndrome’ which is a common issue with most Frenchies. Extra caution will be needed to ensure his safety when it gets hot, on walks and if he gets over excited.

The bottom line: Caygeon is a royal sweetheart of a dog. He’s affectionate, smart and very cool. Just as happy hanging besides his peeps, lying on the floor next to them or going for walks. His foster notes; “In keeping with his princely personality, when facing the elements, he requires boots and a color-coordinated jacket (flattering color schemes are my idea, not his!) I learned that the first morning walk in the rain. We walked 50 feet, he abruptly turned me around and headed home”. Well of course. As you wish, your majesty - your palace awaits!

If Caygeon seems like a good match for you, please fill out an application at: covetedcanines.org/application
