Caspian's Story

Hi there, I'm Caspian, a 50-pound Shepherd and Red Heeler mix with a gentle heart and a soft, thoughtful approach to the world.

New places and unfamiliar people can make me a little cautious at first, but with slow, kind introductions I warm up quickly and start leaning on my person for comfort and reassurance. I don't love being too far away from the people I trust, and when I'm feeling unsure, I may gently hop up to stand against you or even try to sit in your lap just to be close and feel safe.

I know my name, I'm very curious despite my nerves, and I'm a big fan of food and tasty bones, which helps make learning and bonding extra fun. I can be easily spooked by sudden movements or raised objects, and I might flinch or cower when something surprises me, so I really need a calm, patient home that understands my sensitivities.

I'd thrive in an active family who can keep me engaged, but who's also willing to start off low-key and let me settle in at my own pace. With plenty of reassurance, confidence-building, and lots of love, I know I'll blossom into an incredibly loyal, affectionate companion.

My adoption fee of $225+tax covers the cost of my care and stay here at the humane society.

All Pennington County residents must also pay an additional $8 licensing fee at time of adoption.

Happy Adopting!

Humane Society of The Black Hills's Adoption Policy
The adoption process may take up to one hour to complete but we’ll keep it as simple and streamlined as possible. Here are the steps when you’re considering adopting a pet: - Visit our website to see available animals or see them on-site during regular hours, seven days a week. - When you find a dog, cat or small animal you would like to spend more time with, simply call the Humane Society of the Black Hills at (605) 394-4170 for an appointment. - Occasionally, our team is able to accommodate walk-ins, but as we cannot guarantee them, it is best to call for an appointment. -During your scheduled appointment, an adoption advisor will review the animal's history with you and bring the animal to meet you for an initial visit. - A second appointment may be made for you for a variety of reasons (Ex. You have a dog at home you'd like to bring in to meet the pet next). -Once you have met a pet that you think is your perfect match and you have been approved to adopt, your adoption advisor will take you through the adoption process, and you can take your new family member home!
