Cashew's Story

MEET CASHEW!

Fostered in Milton, Delaware

If you've followed ASF for a few years, Cashew may look familiar. Sadly, this handsome boy recently came back to us through no fault of his own—and he needed us.

Cashew returned skinny, with double ear infections, skin sores, and an old fracture in his right hind ankle that we had not previously been told about. While playing with his foster friends, he re-fractured that ankle. After three months of splints, healing, and carefully supervised hand-walking, Cashew is finally ready to run, play, and find his forever home! He may occasionally have a slight limp and should remain on a joint supplement.

Cashew is a 4-year-old neutered male Australian Shepherd who is, at heart, a devoted Velcro dog. He loves his people, follows them from room to room, showers them with kisses, and happily flops over for belly rubs. He's quiet and well-mannered indoors, settles nicely after activity, and is perfectly content lounging nearby while you go about your day.

He is house trained and crate trained, although being with his humans is definitely his preference. Outside, he has plenty of Aussie energy and loves running around his securely fenced yard with his two female foster companions. He could enjoy living with a larger, mellow, stable dog—or he could happily soak up all the attention as an only dog.

And yes... he's an Aussie. He's loving, smart, rambunctious, opinionated, occasionally demanding, and an absolute silly nut. Bring out the toys and he'll happily deliver them to you!

Cashew's biggest challenge is leash reactivity toward other dogs and trucks. In a quiet environment without distractions, he walks nicely and matches his person's pace. A front-clip harness or Gentle Leader works best for him. He is very food motivated, eager to please, and has previously made good progress with consistent training and redirection. His adopter will need to continue that work.

Cashew also has a high prey drive and can nip at a stranger's legs when stressed, although he has never broken skin. Because of this, he needs an experienced adopter who understands herding breeds, can recognize when he is becoming overwhelmed, and will continue working on appropriate responses and management.

For the best match, Cashew needs no cats, no small pets, and no young children.

He loves car rides.
He is wonderful with his veterinarian and vet techs.
He's incredibly smart and food motivated.
And once you're his person, he is ALL IN.

CASHEW'S IDEAL HOME

Securely fenced yard
No young children
No cats or small pets
Experienced Aussie/herding-breed owner
Continued leash-reactivity training
A balanced, mellow larger dog—or life as your one-and-only
Plenty of toys to carry around
A comfy couch and someone who appreciates a serious cuddle buddy

Cashew isn't looking for a marathon runner or busy neighborhood walking partner right now. He's looking for someone who sees the wonderful dog behind the behaviors that still need some work—a person willing to give him structure, consistency, and the security of knowing he's finally home.

If you have herding-breed experience and are ready for a loyal, affectionate, intelligent companion who will devote his whole heart to you, Cashew is waiting.

Apply to adopt Cashew:
https://www.australianshepherdsfurever.org/adoption-application

There is an additional $20 microchip fee which includes registration and transfer to his new family. All adoption fees are used for future rescue efforts.
