Carson — LONGTIME RESIDENT!'s Story

URGENT! Carson has been at the shelter for a month. He needs a new home ASAP!

Carson is a 4-year-old Labrador Retriever mix currently being held at the Kern County Animal Services - Bakersfield Shelter. He has been at the shelter since January 26, 2026 and is ready for his new home.

IMPORTANT: Carson was clearly abused. He is very scared at the shelter. It was obvious no one at the shelter had worked with him until we saw his photo and asked our social media video content creator to work with him. He is making great progress, going from hiding in the corner to jumping up and down when he sees our video creator. He has been sniffing her, licking her hand, and letting her touch him. But he gets nervous when he sees another person walking by his kennel. He needs a home with someone who has a lot of patience and a lot of experience with mistreated dogs. Unfortunately, the shelter does not want to give him more time.

Pet ID: A1240288

Companion Animal Protection Services (CAPS), a national nonprofit based in Thousand Oaks, CA., is partnering with Kern County Animal Services in Bakersfield to find homes for high risk dogs. The shelter has more than 300 dogs and puppies in two metal warehouses with no outdoor runs. Dogs over five months old are at high risk for euthanasia because of lack of space and too many abandoned dogs in the community.

Please contact CAPS if you are interested in adopting, rescuing or fostering, and we will make sure the shelter contacts you. They do not answer phones or respond often to voice messages due to understaffing.

PLEASE NOTE: Foster homes must be in Kern County. The dogs are in Bakersfield, not Thousand Oaks. CAPS can arrange transportation if you are on the West Coast.

https://caps-web.org/contact-caps/
*No phone calls, please.
