Carlos's Story

Pomona, CA You must live within 1.5 hours of where the dog is being fostered

We're excited to introduce you to a charming little white and black Chihuahua who recently joined us from a shelter in Riverside, California. We were quite surprised that this tiny fellow, weighing only about 4 1/2 to 5 pounds, hadn't found his forever home sooner, perhaps simply due to his small size. Upon picking him up, we learned his shelter name was Cracker, which we felt deserved a bit of an upgrade.

During the car ride back, as music by Carlos Santana played, immediately followed by Tito Fuentes, his new name became clear: Carlos. He's no longer Cracker! We also welcomed another dog impounded the same day, now named Tito (formerly Tater), so our former Tater and Cracker are now Carlos and Tito!

Carlos is quite the character. Despite his small stature, he carries himself with the confidence of an Irish Wolfhound, often playfully teasing larger dogs. When they decide to engage in a chase, he takes off yelping dramatically, as if in grave danger. He's a surprisingly swift little guy and will quickly dart into the nearest small space to escape once he's had his fun. We have a feeling that if you could peek inside his hiding spot, you'd find him cheekily sticking his tongue out at whoever was chasing him!

He's generally a well-behaved dog, though he can be a little vocal at times. Carlos is mostly house-trained but will benefit from a bit of patience and consistency in a new environment. It's important to remember that even house-trained dogs need time to adjust to a new routine and schedule, so there might be a few accidents initially. He enjoys short outings every couple of hours to bask in the sun before coming back inside.

Carlos truly loves to be near his people, whether it's sitting contentedly beside them or snuggling up for some lap time. However, he isn't overly dependent or a "Velcro" dog. He would be a wonderful companion for someone looking for a small dog to share cuddles, belly rubs, and lots of affection with.

If you think Carlos might be the perfect new member of your family, please don't hesitate to get in touch with us.

Gunter's Legacy Animal Rescue, Inc.'s Adoption Policy
We are based in Claremont, CA . However, we have adoptable in Northern and Southern California. Please read each description of the animal for their location. You must live in California and within 1.5 hours of where the dog/cat is being fostered. All of our adoptable animals are given a thorough wellness checkup. Senior cats or dogs may receive additional tests, i.e., bloodwork. All receive a fecal, a heartworm test, DHPP, Rabies, Bordetella, and a microchip, and are neutered/spayed. We also provide any additional necessary tests, x-rays, ultrasounds, medications, and consults with specialists and necessary medical procedures. All animals also receive comprehensive dental cleaning and extractions when deemed necessary by our veterinarians. Step 1 - Application Adopter candidates are required to complete and submit an adoption application which will be reviewed by Gunter's Legacy Animal Rescue's Board of Directors. If the application is approved for the first step either a board member and/or the foster of the animal you are interested in will call you for a phone interview. Step 2 - Home Check Once the 1st step has been completed, reviewed, and receives initial approval, we will schedule a mandatory home check. Step 3 - Meet & Greet If the 1st and 2nd step is approved, we will schedule a meet and greet with the potential adopters and dog(s). It is required that all members of the adoptive family must be present for the meet and greet. Step 4 - Pet Introduction If the adopter already has existing pets (dogs or cats), we require all the pets to be properly introduced by a member of Gunter's Legacy Animal Rescue. We will not adopt a dog into a home that has reached its city-mandated limit. All required steps must be completed and approved by the Board of Directors before finalizing the adoption. Adoption Process and Policies: Not all dogs listed on this website are currently available for adoption, each dog's bio will contain its availability We are a small non-profit rescue and we are completely run and operated by unpaid volunteers. We will try as much as possible to return all calls, emails, and statuses. All our dogs once cleared for adoption will be seeking permanent loving homes. Before applying to adopt, please understand we are looking for people and/or families who are ready and willing to commit to a dog for its entire lifespan. This could be up to 20 years. Adoption Requirements:? Adopters must be at least 25 years of age Please consider the age and size of the dog, a dog can live to be in their late teens to 20 years old please be mindful of a dog's age. Adopters must live in the state of California and within 1.5 hours of where the foster pet is located Must have a valid CA Drivers License or ID We cannot/will not guarantee any of our adoptable dogs are "hypoallergenic". Be willing and able to follow the mandatory adoption process and contract We do not adopt dogs or cats to families with children under the age of 10 years old If you disagree we understand but this is our policy. This policy was thoroughly researched and an attorney and veterinarians were consulted before we wrote this policy. Anybody adopting an animal should do their research regarding the breed, potential size, characteristics, and known behavior of the dog they are adopting. Dogs/cats are not a one-size/breed fits all. The animal must be for the person(s) completing the adoption application. Must allow a representative to follow up with the adoptive family post-adoption at 2 weeks and again at 6 months Be willing to provide the adopted dog with premium food (not supermarket food), water, and regular medical care (vaccines, flea/heartworm treatment, dental, and any other medically necessary medications, procedures, etc.) for the rest of their natural life Agree to the Gunter's Legacy Animal Rescue Adoption Contract Agree that Gunter's Legacy Animal Rescue has the RIGHT to regain possession of the adopted dog without notice if any of the terms of the contract have been violated. Disclaimer: Some details about our dogs might have changed before we’ve been able to update our website. When we get in touch with you, we will have the most current information. Also, information about our dogs is based to the best of our knowledge, but we can make no guarantees about the dog’s health or temperament. Return Policy: We do try to make good adoption matches, and for our clients and our dogs to live happily together always. However, GLAR remains committed to the dogs for the remainder of their lives and will accept dogs back, by appointment, should it not work out. When adopting, we ask clients to be prepared and committed to providing the dog and themselves at least a week together to settle in prior to deciding to return the dog.
