Captain's Story

Have you ever wanted to bond with a dog so deeply that you never stopped touching? Captain can do that! Do you love the feeling of thoughtful, soulful eyes that *never close* watching you? Captain is your guy! Do you rarely see other people or change your routine? Perfect for the ole Cap!

Captain is a seven-year-old, 60# Border Collie who found his way into rescue when his owner passed away. Raised in a small suburb with his siblings, Captain is learning how to venture out on his own. Captain has lovely medium energy: all he asks is for some exercise each day and time with his humans.

He loves to explore the woods and is never far from his person. Captain is gaining confidence by making his own choices and enjoying nature (or, as they say: he’s enjoying being a dog!). Captain has a lovely recall and has gotten himself into good shape running and exploring with the other dogs in his foster home. They coexist peacefully, and he respects their space. He is lovely with cats.

If allowed, Captain can be somewhat ‘pushy’ with people. Consistent rules helped him learn how to relax and take a break in his crate or on a mat, and how to follow his person's lead instead of the other way around. He learns quickly and has a good understanding of basic obedience commands. Impressively, he easily executes them close or at a distance He quickly picks up on what his human wants and the routine of his home in true a Border Collie fashion.

He walks nicely on a leash and is perfectly content watching TV or hanging out in the kitchen, supervising meal prep. Captain will do best with a quiet family or adults. He is okay with young kids, but a high energy family is not his ideal.

If you’ve ever wanted to own a very handsome, nicely bred, mature Border Collie, Captain is for you!

Captain is being fostered in St. Joseph, MN.

Captain's adoption fee is $450 + MN sales tax. He is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on age-appropriate vaccines. Upon adoption, all of our dogs go to their new homes with a collar and harness, leash, starter food, blanket, favorite toys & treats. They are current on flea/tick and heartworm prevention.

As a foster-based rescue, we do not have a central facility to visit. Meet and greets with specific dogs are arranged once your adoption application (not an inquiry through Petfinder) has been received, processed, and approved. We are located in Minnesota and adopt to an area 400 miles from Minneapolis/St. Paul.

Heart of a Border Collie Rescue's Adoption Policy
Please read 'Do You Have What It Takes' on our website (www.hoabcr.org/how-to-adopt) before applying to adopt a dog through our rescue. You may also find information about Border Collies helpful (www.hoabcr.org/border-collie-info). Steps in our adoption process include: 1) Filling out an application. Taking this step indicates you are truly interested in adopting a dog - it is not binding. 2) If your application meets the requirements for the dog you're interested in, it will be screened through an initial interview with one of our volunteers. If your application does not meet the requirements, you will not be contacted. 3) If we determine your home could be a good fit for one of our dogs, we will complete reference and vet checks, and set up a home visit, which may occur in person or virtually. 4) If approved, details about your application are sent to the foster that has the dog that you're interested in. If the foster feels you are a match for their foster dog, they will call you to talk in detail about the dog, and possibly move to an in-person meeting. Meetings are allowed AFTER applications are fully approved as described above. 5) If that dog is not deemed to be a good match, we may suggest another dog for you, or your application will be kept on file for a potential future dog. 6) Adoption is complete with payment and a signed adoption contract. Our adoption fees are specified in individual Petfinder listings. The fee includes spay/neuter, microchip, heartworm and Lyme tests, rabies & distemper & Bordetella vaccinations (if old enough). Our dogs go to their new homes with a collar, harness, leash, rescue ID tag, starter food, toys and blanket. We are required to charge appropriate MN sales tax.
