Captain's Story

Hi there! My name is Captain, and I'm a 67-pound Husky mix with a big personality, a curious mind, and lots of love to give!

I'm an active guy who loves exploring my surroundings and checking out all the new things the world has to offer. I'm also a very smart boy, and if you have a tasty snack in your hand, you might just see me show off a few tricks to impress you! Food is definitely one of my favorite motivators, so it's a great way to help keep my clever mind busy. When I'm not out exploring, I enjoy the softer side of life, too! Butt scratches, affection, and being loved on are all things I can appreciate. I especially enjoy playing with tennis balls, so if you're looking for a buddy to join you for some fun and games, I'd love to be considered!

I can be a little anxious at times, but with patience, understanding, and reassurance, I have so much potential to blossom into a wonderful companion. I came to the shelter with my buddy Hunter, and we've enjoyed having each other around, playing together, and keeping each other company. However, we're perfectly okay going to separate homes! Since I'm a big, active, and intelligent guy, I'm looking for a family who can accommodate my size and energy level while providing plenty of physical exercise and mental enrichment. Puzzle toys, training sessions, games, and opportunities to explore would be wonderful ways to keep my busy brain happy!

I'll admit that I can sometimes have a stubborn streak and enjoy doing my own thing, so I'll need a family who understands that I may not always be ready to listen the first time and who can work with me using patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. I'm a sweet, playful boy with so much personality, and I'm hoping to find someone who appreciates my independent spirit while helping me feel safe and confident. If you're looking for a smart, fun-loving adventure buddy who also enjoys a good butt scratch and some quality time with his people, I might just be your guy!

My adoption fee of $225+tax covers the cost of my care and stay here at the humane society.

All Pennington County residents must also pay an additional $8 licensing fee at time of adoption.

Happy Adopting!

Humane Society of The Black Hills's Adoption Policy
The adoption process may take up to one hour to complete but we’ll keep it as simple and streamlined as possible. Here are the steps when you’re considering adopting a pet: - Visit our website to see available animals or see them on-site during regular hours, seven days a week. - When you find a dog, cat or small animal you would like to spend more time with, simply call the Humane Society of the Black Hills at (605) 394-4170 for an appointment. - Occasionally, our team is able to accommodate walk-ins, but as we cannot guarantee them, it is best to call for an appointment. -During your scheduled appointment, an adoption advisor will review the animal's history with you and bring the animal to meet you for an initial visit. - A second appointment may be made for you for a variety of reasons (Ex. You have a dog at home you'd like to bring in to meet the pet next). -Once you have met a pet that you think is your perfect match and you have been approved to adopt, your adoption advisor will take you through the adoption process, and you can take your new family member home!
