Captain's Story
What is your name?
I’m Captain! My foster mom also likes to call me Meatball and Big Boy, so you could say I have a couple of different names.

How old are you?
I was born May 17th, 2015, I turned 7 a couple of months ago.

What do you look like?
I am very handsome, if I must say so myself. I am about 2 feet tall at the shoulder, and my weight goes between 72-75lbs. I am solid white with a black eyepatch and black spots on my ears. I also look like I’m wearing eyeliner ?.

Are you a pit bull?
Actually, even though I was labeled a pit bull in the shelter, my foster mom believed that I was likely mislabeled so she gave me an Embark DNA test. It turns out that I only have a very small percent of pit bull (less than 10%). My Embark breed identification test results say that I am 90% American Bulldog and the remaining 10% is Neapolitan Mastiff and APBT. The American Bulldog is not recognized by the AKC, but the UKC describes the breed here:
https://www.ukcdogs.com/american-bulldog

What kind of personality do you have?
I am a typical American Bulldog. I adore my family, but I can be aloof when I first meet new people. Please do not be offended - it’s not you, it’s my genetics. A little patience and time and I am your best bud and cuddle connoisseur. I have impeccable house manners, and my off switch is amazing. I like to chill on the couch with you, or I am up for a long hike in the woods. Totally up to you. I am ready for pretty much everything you can throw at me.

I am kind of a big guy, so my foster mom wants me with kiddos at least 5 years old if possible. I have lived harmoniously with 2 female dogs, but I am selective about my dog friends. I have been exposed to male puppies on crate and rotate, and I have not been reactive, but I probably would not like to share a home with a male. I like to be the king of my kingdom.

What is your love language?
I would say quality time. I don’t have to be velcroed to you at all times, but it’s nice to have company around. Unless we’re cuddling - then I like to burrow under the blankets and snuggle on the couch or in your bed with you. Cuddling is a full body contact sport for me.

What do you like to eat?
I get dry kibble. I also get different treats when I’m training. I also sometimes get dog safe vegetables with my food.

What is your favorite toy?
BALL! Hose is a close second, but my foster mom doesn’t agree that’s actually a toy.

Do you know any tricks?
I’m bilingual! My foster mom wanted to keep it consistent between myself and my foster sisters, so while I know commands in English, I also know all of my basic commands in French! I know how to wave, fist bump, speak, spin in both directions, place, and I’m learning to sit pretty. And, BIG NEWS, I just received my AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) title! My foster mom has done so much training with me, and all of our hard work together has really paid off! I am currently learning dock diving, so if you love the water, I would love to enjoy it with you. I am housebroken, crated trained and walk very nicely on leash. I am a cultured gentleman, so I like trying new things.

What scares you?
I’ve been exposed to a lot of different potential triggers, and so far, nothing really scares me. On the rare occasion I startle, I recover instantly and act like nothing happened.

Do you like cats?
They seem all right. I haven’t been around a lot of cats, but our neighbors have a couple, and I always ignore them if I see them outside.

Do you have any doggie best friends?
My best friend is Mercy, who is a fellow Even Chance alum and the same age as me. There’s a running joke in my house that she is my girlfriend. I would agree.

Who do you live with in your foster home and who is your closest companion?
I live with my foster mom plus Mercy and and a female Belgian Malinois named Phoenix. Phoenix and I got into an argument last summer because I used to resource guard - and now she does not like me because of it - so we spend time out in our home separately.

Describe your perfect day:
A better question would be ‘what’s YOUR perfect day?’ because I’m always up for whatever adventure you’re going on today.

If you could be anywhere in the world, where would it be?
I love to sunbathe on the patio when it’s sunny out, so probably there or the pool I go to for dock diving. I am obsessed with water and love swimming.

How is your health?

Healthy as can be. I used to be 30 pounds overweight for most of my adult life, but I dropped it in my foster home. Now I feel and act like a young buck again! You probably wouldn’t guess my age if I hadn’t mentioned it. I’ve been monitored by my vet, and it doesn’t look like there’s any lasting effects. I am on Dasuquin for Large Breeds as a precaution. I think I have some mild allergies in the warmer months, but it’s nothing I have to be on medication for. My Embark test, also shows that I am clear of genetic diseases.

Where do you hang out when you are home alone?
My crate. It’s nice because it’s big and open, so I can see what’s going on around me.

Where do you sleep?
I sleep in my crate. My foster mom keeps it stocked with lots of fresh blankets, so I’m always comfortable.

What was life like before you were rescued by Even Chance and brought into the welcoming arms of your foster parents?
I am originally from St. Louis County Animal Control, where I was dropped off with my brother as a pup. I was picked up by Even Chance, and adopted out pretty quickly. My first owner had a lifestyle change years later, and I was returned to Even Chance when I was 6 years old. I am hoping that the next time I find a forever home it is truly forever.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Even Chance does not operate on a first come, first serve basis. In most cases we have already decided the type of home and owner we want for our dogs. These opinions are based on the temperament tests we perform prior to accepting the dog into our program and the behaviors the dogs display as they grow up. Our agency reserves the right to deny acceptance of any dog to an owner who we feel the lifestyle does not match that of the dog. We are in no way judging you or your lifestyle; we simply want to put our dogs in the best living situation possible. We take very seriously the decision we make when it comes to placing one of our dogs in a forever home. If I sound like the perfect pit bull for your and your family and you are interested in giving me a forever home, do not hesitate! Please fill out an application here and my foster family will contact you to schedule an in-person meet and greet. We look forward to meeting any and all interested applicants.
