Caney's Story
About Caney: She is estimated to be 6 years old Tri color English setter that weighs 63 lbs.

Location: East Granby, CT

Background: Caney came in to rescue when her first family had to make a big move across the country. Caney is the kind of girl that needs a fenced in yard and quality time outside. This would not be the case at the family's new location. Fortunately, she ended up with OESR. While she has been in foster, she is spayed, vaccinated, had blood work, and has gotten her Cushing's symptoms and medications in check. She is thriving in every way.

Activity Level: She is a professional snuggler, amateur acrobat and full-time good girl. If you have been searching for a setter that can go from expert level critter hunter to couch-pretzel, cuddle-puddle ..she is your girl. She's a typical setter with medium to high energy, a heart of gold and a unique talent for performing spontaneous somersaults right in your lap. In the house she's the queen of cozy- belly up naps while snoring (sometimes loudly) with her teeth peeking out ... its hysterical! Outside she's a whole different girl- squirrels and chipmunks BEWARE! She's living her best life while on critter patrol, running laps in the yard and digging the occasional hole.

Social Skills: Caney currently lives with 4 other setters and a Tibetan spaniel mix. Her foster mom also boards dogs at home so she has met a bunch of new friends over the last few months. Caney gets along beautifully with other dogs. She is polite, gentle, and very respectful. She does not necessarily play with them but coexists perfectly. Every now and then she will clumsily roll off the couch in her sleep and land directly on the grumpy, resident, senior dog. He has big feelings about this invasion of personal space, but she apologizes with her eyes, and he forgives her almost immediately.

Fence Requirement: Caney requires a fence- a tall & sturdy one. Ideally, one that she can't dig under either. Don't forget, her favorite hobby is critter patrol. Foster mom still supervises her outside time-just in case. Think of it as bonding time- you watch Caney ... Caney watches for chipmunks.

Training & Commands: Caney's recall has gotten much better, but it still needs work. She doesn't hear anything when she's honed in on chipmunk or squirrel. However, when food is involved, her recall is A+ She knows "sit" and does it automatically when she sees you move your hand towards the treat jar. She knows "in your room" when it's time to go into her crate. We are working on "leave it" and her impulse control. Very much a work in progress when it comes to food; HaHa!

Crate Training: She is excellent in her Crate! At night she sometimes gets off the couch to finish her beauty sleep there. She will occasionally whine or bark for a minute or 2 but that's when she's the only dog being crated- like when we have the front door open to bring in the groceries and don't want her to bolt. Or when one of her foster siblings is taking forever to eat their dinner. Caney should be crated when you're not in the house. If left unsupervised, she will give your dirty dishes in the sink a pre-wash, clean your counters of any crumbs while searching for rogue snacks and occasionally, she will treasure hunt in the garbage.

House Training: She is fully house trained. Cushing's makes dog extra thirsty. So frequent potty breaks are a plus.

Leash Training: Caney was a sled dog in a past life. In this life, she was bred to hunt. If you combine the 2, it makes for some subpar leash manners. In pet stores and at the vet she's great on a leash! But she hasn't been able to master a leisurely stroll around the neighborhood just yet.

Medical History: She was diagnosed with Cushing's disease shortly before coming to the rescue in July. She requires daily medication morning and night and bloodwork twice a year to check her cortisol and ACTH levels. Dogs with Cushing tend to drink lots of water and are very enthusiastic about food (understatement). Caney is no exception to this- hence her affinity for counter surfing, "washing" dishes, and inspecting the garbage. Caney is literally the goofiest dog in the whole house! Her foster mom laughs constantly because of her. Everything she does is comical but if she had to choose, it would absolutely be her somersaults. She does them in your lap, on the couch, on the kitchen floor and once in the backseat of the car while wearing a cone, on her ride home from being spayed! They are awkward, random, sometimes very inconvenient but they are ALWAYS funny!!

Her life in foster home: Caney has been in her foster home since July and has blossomed into the most wonderful girl. Her foster family would keep her in a heartbeat-except they already have 5 dogs, and six is "too many" according to foster dad (who still whispers his love for her many times a day). Caney is worth every drop of water on the floor and every stolen crumb (or bagel, steak, PB&J). She is sweet, silly, affectionate, loyal, and ready for a family that will adore her.
