Calloway 's Story

If sunshine decided it was tired of floating around the sky and instead wanted to try life as a dog… you’d get me. Calloway. I’m basically the warm patch of sunlight that hits the living room floor in the afternoon — the one everyone subconsciously migrates toward because it just makes everything feel a little better. Except in my case, the sunshine comes with four legs, a wagging tail, and a generous scattering of golden freckles that look like someone gently sprinkled sunlight across my face. Basically, if you took sunshine, added freckles, and gave it a tail that never stops wagging… congratulations. You’ve just described me. Calloway. Your personal emotional-support sunbeam. ☀️

I look like I was gently sprinkled with sunlight — little golden freckles everywhere, like the sun got a little carried away while making me. And honestly, the personality matches. Which is funny, because technically I have every reason not to be a ray of sunshine. You may remember I’m what the professionals call a $7,000+ dog, not because I am a "designer dog" though. For the record, I’m a 45–50 lb, 8-10 month male Great Pyrenees mix with freckles that make it look like I was personally kissed by the sun. So yes, aesthetically speaking, I was already working with a strong foundation. But my “special” status didn’t come from being a designer dog. It came from the fact that I shouldn’t be here at all. When I was found and brought into the shelter, I had a wound on my throat so large that food was literally falling out when I tried to eat. Not exactly the kind of situation you bounce back from easily. In fact, the plan was that if no one stepped up by the end of the day… that would have been it for me. But Pyr Paws said yes. And then they said yes again when they learned what it would actually take to save me — extensive surgery, hospitalization, and a very delicate repair in a spot that is… let’s just say… not exactly easy for surgeons to work on. My vet spent hours carefully cleaning and repairing the wound to make sure everything was done right. The prognosis was guarded because things could have gone a lot of different directions. But here’s the thing about me. I’m a fighter. With the help of my incredible vet team, a lot of care, and a whole lot of people rooting for me, I bounced back. I graduated from my feeding tube, moved into my wonderful foster home, and now I’m eating on my own like a champion and getting stronger every single day. So yes… I would say I’m a pretty special boy. Because after all that I’m still here — freckles, sunshine, and all. ☀️

How do I get along with other dogs? I love to play. Wrestling, zooming, mutual nonsense in the yard — all excellent activities. I’m the kind of dog who shows up with big “Hey friends, what are we doing today?” energy and assumes everyone else is equally excited about it. Basically, if your dog enjoys having a cheerful, freckled goofball around to play with, I am more than happy to volunteer for the position. How do I do with cats? Well. Let’s just say I believe cats are very fast, mysterious creatures that clearly enjoy a good cardio workout when they run from me. And as a supportive community member, I am happy to help facilitate that. The cats, however, seem less enthusiastic about this interpretation of events. Have I been around kids? Not yet. That said, I’m generally a happy, friendly guy who enjoys people and assumes most humans are here for pets, compliments, and possibly snacks. But since I haven’t had the chance to meet any of the smaller, louder, faster-moving humans yet, I can’t officially comment on my professional experience with them.

Energy Level: 7 out of 10. I’ve got a good amount of pep in my step. I enjoy playing, going outside, and generally participating in whatever activities the household has going on. Yard zoomies? Excellent. Playtime with dog friends? Outstanding. Hanging out with my people and supervising life? Also important work. But I’m not running a 24-hour chaos marathon either. Once the fun is over, I’m perfectly capable of settling down and existing like a civilized member of society. Adventure-seeker or homebody? Honestly… I’m flexible. I like to think of myself as adaptable with excellent enthusiasm for whatever the day’s agenda happens to be. Want a buddy for outings, walks, exploring, or generally pretending we’re on some grand life adventure? Great. I’m in. Let’s go see what’s out there. Prefer a dog who is perfectly happy hanging around the house, supervising the yard, and participating in the occasional zoomie session before settling down near his people? Also great. I can absolutely do that too. Basically, I’m not here to dictate the lifestyle. I’m here to enthusiastically participate in it. Whatever it happens to be. Overall temperament? Happy. Go. Lucky. That’s the official term. The technical one, if you ask me, is “permanently pleased to exist.” I wake up every morning like the universe personally scheduled another great day just for me. People? Love them. Other dogs? Excellent. Food? Huge fan. Going outside? Fantastic. Being alive in general? Five stars, no notes. Despite everything I’ve been through — which, as we’ve established, includes a rather dramatic medical storyline and a vet bill that could probably fund a small vacation — I somehow still approach life like it’s one big pleasant surprise. Basically, I’m the kind of dog who assumes good things are about to happen… and then wags my tail just in case they do.

Where would I thrive best? Listen, I’m a Great Pyrenees mix. Which means somewhere deep in my fluffy little brain lives a very serious “perimeter security manager.” I take my responsibilities seriously. The yard must be inspected. The fence line must be checked. Suspicious leaves must be monitored. So while I’m sure I could technically function in a home without a fenced yard, I would very much prefer one. A nice, secure fence allows me to properly perform my duties — running a few zoomies, checking the perimeter like a professional, and making sure the neighborhood squirrels know someone is on watch. Am I potty trained? Yes. I am a gentleman, not a barbarian. Have I been kenneled? Also yes. And before anyone starts imagining dramatic protest speeches and theatrical fainting spells… I do just fine in there. I may not write my kennel a heartfelt love letter, but I handle it like a responsible adult dog when needed. Do I chew on things I’m not supposed to? Let’s just say I prefer to keep my reputation clean. I am, in fact, not a beaver attempting to add “rustic texture” and artistic flair to your belongings. Your furniture, shoes, and household items are safe. Do I bark? I’m what you might call a casual barker. If something noteworthy happens, I may offer a brief public service announcement to make sure everyone is aware. You know. Just doing my job. But I’m not out here hosting an all-day talk show. I make my point and then move on with my life like a reasonable dog.

And now we arrive at the part where I politely remind you that dogs like me do not simply fall out of the sky and land in your living room. Tragic, I know. So, if you feel like my freckled face belongs with you

You must fill out an adoption application. Yes. Paperwork. I know. Apparently the nice people at Pyr Paws insist on things like “screening homes” and “making sure I go to a good family.” So you’ll need to complete the application so they can send it over to my foster family for approval. And when you’re approved? You will need to come pick me up in Hutchinson, Kansas. I will not be personally driving myself to you. I checked — my license situation is still unresolved.

So go ahead. Fill out the application at https://www.pyrpawsandfluffytailsrescue.com/adoption-app. Impress my foster family. Make a road trip out of it.

I’ll be here in Hutchinson — freckles, sunshine, and tail wags ready — waiting for my people to show up. ☀️🐾

Calloway
