Callie's Story

A060049 Callie; spayed female Catahoula mix; est 9 years; 43.40 lbs
Contact: Calaveras County Animal Services
📱 (209)754-6509
🌐 Website: https://animal.calaverasgov.us/
📧 Email: animal@calaverascounty.gov

Meet Callie, an older lady looking for a home of her own.

Callie welcomes touch when offered and will approach us to ask for loving strokes and comfort. She is a good-natured, affectionate lady. Being more mature in age, she is well past that insane-in-the-puppy-brain thing, which can be fun but also exhausting! 🤪If you are seeking a mellower snuggle buddy, one of these ladies might be just the ticket.

When Callie arrived at the shelter, she was frightened of everything and everybody. With the patient coaxing and gentle love of staff and volunteers, she has become much more relaxed and trusting. She will need continued patience and time to gain confidence. Her progress thus far is a good indicator that they have the ability and disposition to bond deeply with a caring family that can provide a place they feel safe and loved. In addition, she was badly emaciated. She is still underweight but with extra rations is filling out nicely.

We can see the progress as Callie gazes at us now with hopeful trust. She shows a depth of sweetness in her liquid amber eyes that tugs at our tenderest heart strings. She will lean into her handler's legs for comfort when out on walkies. Some of the unfamiliar noises and sights still frighten her. On the other hand, she perks up and exhibits excitement when encountering deer or other wildlife. Her Catahoula hunting heritage surfaces as she tracks a million scents on the ground. She didn't yank us over, though, even when she really really REALLY wanted to chase a six-point buck that strolled right past her on the shelter property.

With other dogs, Callie is interested in meetings, and generally calm and friendly, though not effusive—at least not yet. She doesn't like other dogs being cray cray right up in her face and will give a low growl of warning if she feels overwhelmed. But even then, once the other dog behaves more appropriately, she is happy to be companionable with them.

During her behavioral testing, Callie did not exhibit anything at all concerning. She was quite anxious about being indoors, however, which is something to keep in mind. She suddenly found herself sliding on the bare floor, which further escalated her nervousness. She accepted comfort and reassurance from us, but was much happier once she got back outside and on solid footing. She may do better in a carpeted home, but regardless of flooring we'd guess she'll need time to regard any new indoor space as her sanctuary. She has the potential to make a lovely companion for the right family.

Callie keeps their inner kennel tidy. Although we can't make guarantees, she may do well with house training.

Callie is spayed and ready to go home with you.

We do not have info on their attitude toward cats at this time.

A meet-and-greet is required if you have other dogs at home.
