Callie's Story

This sweet sweet girl is named Callie. We were contacted by a family in Mancos that needed to rehome some of their dogs and puppies. There were three adults and three puppies that they needed new homes for. There were two additional adult dogs on the property. The puppies went to rescue partners right away, but nobody had ever been to a vet, everybody lived outside with what appeared to be minimal food and sometimes eating garbage. The family had little to no resources, so we arranged discounted dog food for them, and took all five adults to the amazing D-SNiP to be vaccinated and spayed or neutered. One adult went to the Cortez Shelter, Callie went to a foster home, and we had to return the male for now, until we can secure a rescue or foster home for him.

Callie looks like she's been in a hundred dog fights in her life, she was drastically underweight, and had the saddest eyes. We are sure she had a litter every year of her life up until now. She was not allowed in the house, probably never experienced anything as luxurious as her first night in a home in front of a fire on a soft bed. She is loving the good life, and is incredibly sweet. She gets very attached to her people that treat her kindly, and becomes a bit of a velcro dog. But she's so sweet and cuddly, we don't mind at all. She's quite good on a leash, although somewhat reactive to other dogs. We've started working with a trainer, and she's responding really quickly. She really wants to please. She needs an adopter who's willing to continue to work with her. We tested her with cats in a couple different scenarios, and although she seemed curious at first, a little hiss sent her in the opposite direction. The cats didn't run, so she might give chase if they did. We've only introduced her to one child. It was a respectful boy about 8 years old, and she was just as loving and sweet with him as we hoped. At this time, we are recommending that she be the only dog in the home, but it's possible that with the right dog and a patient person, she could coexist and possibly even enjoy another dog. Before she came here, she lived with all those dogs in harmony most of the time. I don't know the circumstances under which she got all these scars, but I can imagine that lack of food was a huge contributor. Callie has a bit of separation anxiety, but we're working on it. She would do best in a home8 where people are able to be with her the majority of the time. She does best in a crate if her people have to leave for a couple of hours. She's such a lovely dog, and she's had so little kindness and comfort in her life. We really just want to find her the best place to spend her golden years. Callie's adoption fee through For Pets' Sake is $150 and includes all her vaccinations up to the date of adoption, spay, and microchip. Located near Cortez Colorado.
