Buttons (Benefactor Dog)'s Story
Meet Buttons

Buttons is a 4-year-old, 10-pound long-haired Dachshund who looks as though he has very strong opinions about velvet furniture despite never having owned any.

He's a little underweight, but enthusiastically correcting that situation. Meals are approached with the seriousness of a tax attorney and considerably more optimism.

Buttons falls deeply in love with his people. He adores belly rubs, kisses, snuggling, and would happily accept a permanent appointment to your lap. If you're going to the kitchen, he has also been meaning to go there.

Being left alone is hard for him right now. New sounds can make him nervous, and he'll protest being crated by himself, but with someone nearby, he settles beautifully. His confidence is growing every day, and he needs someone patient who can keep showing him that the world is a pretty safe place.

He'd thrive with someone home most of the day, whether working from home or retired. He's doing well with another small dog and would be happiest with an easygoing canine companion. Older kids or an adult-only home would be the best fit. He can also be protective of prized possessions and would rather not negotiate over them. Frankly, at ten pounds, every possession probably feels important.

Buttons is also under the care of a fantastic veterinary team after X-rays showed an enlarged heart and a small amount of fluid in his lungs. He's now on medication and doing well, and we'll continue monitoring him closely to determine what care he may need going forward. It's something we're taking seriously, but it's only one small part of a very happy little dog.

He's making great progress with house training, though he still marks occasionally. Tooth brushing remains his lone diplomatic dispute with modern civilization. He considers the entire enterprise unnecessary.

Buttons isn't looking for perfection. He's looking for constancy: someone who understands that the best relationships are built one quiet evening, one belly rub, and one tiny victory at a time.

And judging by everyone who's met him so far, he's entirely worth the investment.

PLEASE READ BELOW:

If you are interested in meeting and/or adopting, the first step is to complete an application and read all of our FAQs:

https://www.takepawsrescue.org/adopt

Please note: Information to determine if you might be a match for one of our animals can only be found on our application.
*An inquiry, questions or introduction through Petfinder is NOT an application*
All known details about our animals are posted on their profile and updated daily. Other info will be discussed in detail with the foster during the application review process. Due to the high volume of introductions/questions received we ask you to submit an application (that application can be used for any dog with Take Paws Rescue).

The adoption fee for adult dogs covers age appropriate vaccinations, microchip, spay/neuter if not yet performed, heartworm test & appropriate heartworm treatment by the rescue's vet. All dogs in our care are also kept up-to-date on HW/Flea Prevention.
For more on this, or for additional information, including the adoption process and our adoption fee scale for all our adoptable pets (including an explanation about Benefactor Dogs), please see our FAQs page:

https://www.takepawsrescue.org/faq

Any breed labels used by Take Paws Rescue, its employees/volunteers, or on vet records provided cannot be guaranteed. Breed labels are given based on information obtained during intake and/or best guesses based on appearance and/or temperament of the dogs and Take Paws Rescue gives no assurance to the accuracy of these labels. Labels are necessary for postings to many animal networking sites, such as our website, Chewy, Pet Finder, and others. These are in no way a guarantee. Additionally, exact age and potential size cannot be guaranteed.

***Take Paws Rescue, based in New Orleans, saves dogs from high-kill shelters across the South, owner surrenders, and discarded dogs with uncertain futures. All of our animals live in foster homes where they are socialized and well cared for. An application will be required to make sure it's the perfect match!
