Butter's Story
Hi, I’m Butter, aptly named for my tendency to melt hearts like butter, or maybe it’s because my ears are as soft as butter, either way, it will be love at first sight. I’m a 5-year-old male Vizsla looking for my perfect long-time partner. I promise to give you all my love and my undivided attention if we are a match, but in return, you must promise me that I will be your one and only. I won’t tolerate any canine or feline housemates, I need you all to myself. Sharing is not my thing; I know what I like, and I work to keep it.

I’d love it if you have an outdoor hobby that involves me, like running, hiking, biking, or even better, something that really uses my brain like scent work, agility, dock diving or hunting under anything but a gun. We could learn this new hobby together during our bonding period! I went out with a falconer last week and had the most fun ever flushing out rabbits. That falconer said I was invited back any time! I must have been really impressive!

I am so smart; my foster mom says I am the smartest Vizsla she has ever fostered and I’m not one to disagree with her. I know all sorts of commands and I am really well-behaved, well, mostly, except if you ask me to share my toys, or my bed, or my space. What can I say, I’m a little particular and I did not learn to share in kindergarten (I think I missed that day while I was out on the trail!).

Here are all of the reasons that I could be your Mr. Right

-I’m super handsome -I know all of the basic commands, sit, down, stay, high five, spin, place, up, off, floor….I could keep going -I have pretty good leash manners, I don’t drag you around and I will sit and hang out on a loose leash -I have a good recall, I won’t run away from you (I’m not stupid, I know who hands out the treats!) -I love to meet people and I won’t jump on them when I do

-I’m potty trained and I tell you when I need to go out -I’m a pretty healthy guy -I love treats, and so it’s super easy to train me to do new things because I will do almost anything for a treat

-I don’t chew furniture or walls or shoes or anything, except a toy. Give me a soft toy and I will have that thing deconstructed in 7 minutes flat!

Of course, nobody is perfect, so there are a few reasons you and I might not work out, but if that is the case, please share me with someone else who might be right!

-The behaviorist says I have a touch of anxiety and OCD, but really, it’s 2023 and mental health is important, so we are treating this with medicine and it’s working pretty well. I have an appointment with a special doctor to check up on this and make sure we don’t need any adjustments. I still don’t like storms and guns and fireworks much, but come on, what self-respecting rescue dog does, am I right?

-As I hinted at above, I don’t like to share. Foster mom calls it a classic case of resource guarding, whatever that means. I love toys, and balls, and soft fluffy dog beds, and food, but I really, really do not like sharing them with other dogs, cats or small children. I don’t exactly remember when I learned this behavior, but I get so worried that they might get taken from me that even when a dog or a kid comes close I have to tell them to back away. Foster mom says that it sounds a little scary when I do this but it sure gets the point across. I’m a great communicator! I actually love to play fetch, and now sometimes I will drop my ball in foster mom’s lap and let her throw it without being worried she won’t give it back, but if her other dogs are around we can’t play because I don’t play nicely with them if a ball is around. She is so proud of me for this progress I am making and she says that I can probably make really good progress in a home where there is not competition for the things that I love, because I trust my person and I love them.

-I don’t really love those things called crates. I will go in one for a treat, but I don’t like it when you shut the door and walk away. Foster mom says that with some practice and training, and the right anxiety medication, I could probably learn to feel okay in one of these things, because I do really like to feel safe and secure. She says it’s just because I wasn’t ever really taught how good those things are. Foster mom says she talked to a trainer, and they said that the best plan for me is to manage my environment so that I am not put in a situation to fail. She said this means that I should just not live with other animals or kids under 14, that I should live with one or two adults who know how to handle the physical and mental demands of a young Vizsla. The trainer also said that my next steps are to learn a really strong “drop it”, “leave it” and “come” command, so that if I am ever in a situation where I have something in my mouth that I shouldn’t, or I feel the need to guard it, I will follow those commands.

Did I tell you already that I am smart? Well, it bears repeating, because I am MENSA level smart, okay, and foster mom says that my capacity to learn is so, so high, so she knows that with a little bit of work, I can learn these new tricks and be an even more perfect boy than I already am.

So, are you my person? I hope you are my person, because I really want a person. I had to come to the rescue because my original person had a baby and I just could not get over it and share my person and my space and my stuff with a tiny human, it was just too much to ask. Foster mom says my forever person is out there though, just waiting for me to come along and complete their life. If you think that might be you, please, please, please fill out an application with Colorado Wyoming Vizsla Rescue so that we can meet! I can’t wait for our first date, I’ll be the handsome one with the wagging tail, you bring the treats!

From Butter's foster Mom "He is the reason you get a Vizsla. He checks ALL the Vizsla boxes! He's incredibly smart, super cuddly, super snuggly, loves to play, totally goofy, loves everyone he meets. I would adopt him immediately if I didn't already have three!"
