Bulma is a 6-year-old German Shepherd who came to us after surviving the kind of neglect no dog should ever experience. When she was found at the shelter, she was in devastating condition. A chain had been wrapped so tightly around her neck that it had to be surgically removed. She was severely malnourished, completely hairless, covered in feces, and her skin was red, raw, and painfully inflamed. She was sick, exhausted, and had clearly been failed for a very long time. We knew we had to save her.<br/><br/>But getting Bulma out of the shelter was only the beginning. Soon after her rescue, she developed bloat and needed emergency surgery. She came dangerously close to dying, but somehow, she pulled through. Then came months of trying to understand why she still could not gain weight and why her body continued struggling despite everything we were doing. We tested for Cushing’s disease, Addison’s disease, and diabetes, but nothing gave us an answer. Finally, we ran an EPI test, and Bulma was positive.<br/><br/>EPI, or Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency, is a lifelong condition that prevents her body from properly digesting and absorbing nutrients. For Bulma, that means prescription hydrolyzed food and pancreatic enzymes with her meals for the rest of her life. It is permanent, but it is manageable. And for the first time in a long time, Bulma’s body is finally responding. She is gaining weight, her coat is growing back, her skin is healing, and her energy is returning.<br/><br/>And now we are finally getting to know the dog underneath all of that suffering. Bulma is playful, affectionate, loyal, and incredibly special. She loves dogs. She loves cats. She loves toys of every kind. She loves pats and rubs. She also happens to look extremely cute in her dinosaur pajamas and has fully embraced the idea that clothing is part of her personality now.<br/><br/>What makes Bulma so remarkable is not only what she survived. It is who she became afterward. After neglect, pain, surgery, and months of medical uncertainty, she still wants to play. She still wants affection. She still wants to trust. She still wants to love.<br/><br/>Bulma will need an adopter who understands that her medical care is not temporary. Her EPI will require lifelong management, consistency, prescription food, and pancreatic enzymes. We are looking for someone who sees that responsibility and still sees her. Not a diagnosis. Not a medical case. Bulma.<br/><br/>She has fought unbelievably hard to get here. Now she deserves a home where she never has to fight for basic care again. A home where her medication is routine, her food is always there, her body continues to heal, and she gets to spend the rest of her life being spoiled, protected, and deeply loved.<br/><br/>Bulma survived everything that was supposed to break her.
