Buddy's Story

***If you are interested in adopting Tucker, please directly email glgrr2003@gmail.com to learn more about his adoption process. Inquiries sent through Petfinder will not be checked.***

This is Buddy! He is about 2.5 years old and is a very loving, playful and sweet boy. Over the past months, Buddy has learned that the world is not a scary place and both humans and dogs can be his friend. He is EXTREMELY handsome and the biggest cuddler I know. He adores his people and never wants to be far.

He can be very shy and timid when first introduced to new people, dogs, and situations but if you are patient and kind to him, he will warm up quickly. Slow introduction is key for him. Buddy absolutely loves the other Lab in the home and would benefit from having another dog in his new home. Being that he can get nervous in new situations or with new people, a dog he knows well seems to bring him comfort and shows him that it’s okay. Thunderstorms and fireworks do not bother him. He is not a fan of the vacuum like most dogs but tolerates it fine, he usually just walks away when it gets too close to him. Buddy has never been to a groomer but loves getting bathed and brushed at home – he acts like getting brushed is a massage.

It is easy to forget his younger age because of how calm he is. He LOVES the outdoors and really comes alive outside. He would need a family that could bring him on the walks that he loves. Plus, he would love to go to the beach to go swimming. He runs like a wild man at the beach frolicking through the water. It is important that his new family will ensure healthy introductions to people he meets along the way. Sometimes he sits on our back deck by himself relaxing and watching deer, squirrels and birds. Because Buddy loves to run freely so much, a fenced in backyard would be the most ideal for him for his new home. I do believe he would be able to learn on an invisible fence, but he does not have experience with us. He can pull on walks, especially at the beginning of them, because he is just so excited for it so he would need a family that is patient and willing to work with him on the pulling.

Buddy had limited exposure prior to coming to our home. With this, walks, car rides and public places have all been new to him. He was slow to adapt but is doing MUCH better and has learned to love all the things. His crate is his safe space. Positive based crate training must be continued in his new home. He is calm and relaxed, but his puppy side comes out when left alone. He can be a collector and a chewer! I have lost a few shoes to him. As long as the house is “puppy proofed” and things are not left for him to get, he does great in the house alone. A benebone is necessary to have for him so he can chew on that when tempted. He is obsessed with squeaky plush toys and always wants to have one nearby. It’s nearly impossible to pick one up to put away because Buddy will grab it from you before you have a chance.

Buddy has not been exposed to cats and does not love small children who get very excitable. Although loud noises don't bother him, startling ones and surprises he is not expecting do. Any children in the home or ones who visit frequently must be 13 years or older.

A home that can provide structure, patience, positive reinforcement, and consistency is a must for Buddy. We are looking for a family that understands the transition period may be difficult for Buddy but is willing to help him through this and build confidence with him.

Buddy is a great dog who will be a great loving addition to any family!

Buddy is being fostered in the Muskegon, MI area. Any adopter must reside in Michigan, Northern Indiana, Northern Illinois or Northern Ohio. Buddy has a $550 adoption fee. He is neutered, up-to-date on all vaccinations, has had a fecal test, has been microchipped and looked over by a vet.

***If you are interested in adopting Buddy, please directly email glgrr2003@gmail.com to learn more about his adoption process. Great Lakes Golden Retriever Rescue's Adoption Policy
We have Goldens in foster homes throughout the State of Michigan; we do not have a facility in Grand Rapids. Once you fill out the pre-application, on our website, you will be sent a detailed form with our entire adoption process and policies. Once you read that and decide if you would like to move forward, you will have to pay a $20 application fee. After those two steps are complete, you will be given a password to our online application. You can then complete the online application and once it is received, it will be assigned to an interviewer. The interviewer will check vet references and contact you within seven business days. Once your application is approved, the interviewer will send you a roster of our available Goldens via e-mail. Your interviewer will be there to answer any questions and aid in any way that they can. Great Lakes does not post all of our available Goldens on this website or Petfinder. We first offer available Goldens to our approved applicants. When you adopt a Golden from Great Lakes, your Golden will have been examined by a veterinarian, spayed or neutered, updated on necessary vaccines and heartworm and fecal checked. Goldens from 2 months to 12 months old have an adoption fee of $700. Goldens aged 1 to 5 years old have an adoption fee of $550. Goldens aged 6 to 9 years of have an adoption fee of $400. Goldens that are aged 10 years and older are $200. When you adopt a Golden from Great Lakes your Golden will have been spayed or neutered, up to date on necessary vaccines, and looked over by a vet. Please note that it is extremely rare that we get puppies under 6 months of age, and we do not have a waiting list.
