Buddy (aka Bentley)'s Story
Hello! My name is Bentley.

Location: Pocatello, Idaho
Age (Estimate): 4 Years
Sex: Male/Neutered
Microchipped: Yes
Current Vaccines: Yes
Parasite Prevention: Current
Weight: 9 lbs.
Children Under 10: No
Children Over 10: No
Friendly With Dogs: Good with small breeds. Timid with large breeds.
Friendly With Cats: Unknown
Potty Trained: Yes
Crate Trained: Needs work, see below.
Leash Trained: Needs work, see below.
Adoption Fee: $250
Additional Notes: Buddy arrived at SSHCR on 1/31/2026. Like many dogs who haven’t always had consistency or stability in life, Buddy comes with some quirks and behaviors that adopters will need to understand and continue working through. In the right home, however, he is an incredibly loyal, loving companion.

Once Buddy trusts you, he becomes a true “Velcro dog” who wants to be by your side at all times. He loves neck scratches, cozy blankets, and quietly relaxing near his people. While he tends to warm up to women faster, he is capable of bonding closely with men as well (his favorite person is a 6.5-foot-tall male).

Buddy does have a bite history tied to fear, anxiety, and trust issues, so he will need a patient, dog-savvy adopter who understands the importance of allowing him time and space to build confidence. He is not the type of dog who will immediately trust strangers, but with consistency, routine, and proper introductions, he continues to make progress.

Buddy also struggles with resource guarding around food. If food falls on the floor, he considers it his, and attempts to take it away may result in growling. Because of this, management and continued training are important. He is also known to raid trash cans if given the opportunity, so a secure trash can with a lid is a must. These behaviors likely stem from periods in his life where food was not consistently available.

He is not a fan of crates, collars, or harnesses, though he has shown significant improvement with all three since beginning anxiety medication and being neutered. Buddy is currently prescribed Fluoxetine (Prozac) for anxiety and should remain on this medication for at least 3 months post-adoption unless otherwise directed by a veterinarian. Fortunately, the medication is affordable, averaging around $9 for a 3-month supply through Chewy.

Buddy will need an adopter committed to patience, structure, and continued positive reinforcement, but for the person willing to earn his trust, he has a lot of love to give. Each day that he is with us is a day that we will work on his issues but ultimately, the most progress won't be made until he's in his furever home as moving and change sets back all progress.

Applications can be completed at https://www.sadiessafehouse.org/adoptablepets

More information on our adoption process and policies can be found at https://www.sadiessafehouse.org/adoptionpolicies
