Buddy's Story
Meet Buddy. Yes, he looks like a Gordon Setter. And when his time was running out at a Nevada shelter where he landed after being picked up as a stray, we answered the pleas to help him to a new family. We ran a DNA test on him and, oops, not a Gordon.
65% Doberman Pinscher
9% Australian Cattle Dog
8% German Shepherd Dog
7% Border Collie
11% Miscellaneous or too low to be significant

Buddy is an approximately 4 year old neutered male and weighs 60#. He has received all core vaccinations, has been wormed, and is heartworm negative and receiving preventative. He is now microchipped. He tested positive for Chagas Disease and is on a treatment schedule. He is not contagious to other dogs.

Buddy is smart and food motivated. He loves string cheese and takes bites very gently. He responds well to training, but he is strong and will need a consistent hand. He respects guidance from men or women. A video of his leash manners level is available.

At his vet visits, he was calm and curious the whole time and happily greeted all the staff. There was only one dog in the waiting room when he was leaving… an unfriendly giant breed… and he didn’t really respond. Back outside at the car, he happily got in the crate.

Someone obviously loved this dog in a previous home. And while he is affectionate with his foster family, he is overcoming being protective with his food bowl. We have found this to be a common trait in dogs with a lack of early training and confidence-building as well as dogs who have been stray for a length of time. He is making great strides in foster care.

As a young athletic boy, Buddy might be a great running partner or competition dog. He would really enjoy both mental and physical exercise. A home with a physically fenced yard (not underground fencing) is also ideal. He needs a stable and somewhat calm household and will not be placed in a home with children because of his unknown background.

Please contact Gordon Setter National Rescue Chairman Kathy Hubbard by email at khubbard@niu.edu to learn more about the opportunity to adopt Buddy. He is fostering just west of Las Vegas, near the southern California state line, and not far from northern Arizona. Some overland transport to meet an adopter is possible.

Thank you.
