Meet Buckwheat, a 6-year-old purebred dachshund weighing 15.5 pounds, with a handsome red-brown coat, here after being surrendered by his previous owners.<br/><br/>Buckwheat is settling into foster life and showing off his goofy side. His favorite trick is burrowing completely under a pile of blankets until he disappears. He's a bit shy and nervous at first, but he warms up with time and patience, and his foster describes him as a sweet, mellow presence around the house.<br/><br/>Environment<br/><br/>Buckwheat is a low-energy homebody who is happiest relaxing rather than out on the go. He's potty trained, though he's had a few accidents while adjusting to his new routine, and his foster works from home and can offer frequent potty breaks to help him settle in. He doesn't need a crate, and a yard would be nice but isn't required. He's never had the chance to learn to walk on a leash before, so he'll need a patient family willing to teach him the ropes. He's done fine with a few hours alone so far, staying quiet until his person returns. He's a little nervous in the car but doesn't bark and doesn't need to be crated for rides.<br/><br/>Pets & People<br/><br/>Buckwheat is a bit shy and nervous with new people at first, though he warms up given time; he hasn't yet been tested around children. He gets along well with his foster's resident dachshund mix, mostly keeping to himself but happy to share a blanket if it means being close by. He does fine with treats and during feedings, though he did once help himself to his foster sibling's bone, so mealtime supervision with other dogs is a good idea.<br/><br/>Health & Special Needs<br/><br/>Buckwheat is currently waiting on routine vet labs, so his care team is keeping an eye on his overall health while results come back. Nothing more is known at this time, and his foster will share any updates as soon as they're available.<br/><br/>Location<br/><br/>Buckwheat is available for adoption from Arlington, VA.
