Brutus D12294's Story

Meet Brutus-Bru to his friends! This handsome guy is a gentle, intelligent swe
etheart who has a pretty simple recipe for happiness: his people
nearby, a good walk, and approximately ALL the balls. Seriously, balls are Bru's favorite thing in the entire world. Add a game of fetch or tug-of-war and you've made his day.

Bru is happiest when he's hanging out with his people. He'll follow you around the house, settle nearby, and occasionally place his big head in your lap to let you know that some head scratches would be very much appreciated. He's perfectly capable of lazing around all day, but don't let that fool you-mention a walk or produce a ball and suddenly this mellow guy is ready for action!

He is a friendly, gentle boy who prefers to greet people politely by walking up for a sniff rather than jumping all over them. He may give a quick bark if something catches him by surprise, but he settles right back in. Bru takes direction beautifully and already knows sit, shake, and lay down. He is fully house trained, crate trained, and does very well in his crate. He may lodge a brief complaint when he first goes in, but he settles down pretty quickly.

Bru has been a little more reserved than expected, but we suspect some of that is simply because his skin has been uncomfortable. As he feels better, we're hoping to see even more of his personality emerge. His future family should be prepared for the possibility of ongoing skin issues and occasional hot spots, so he'll need people who are willing to keep an eye on his skin and stay on top of his care.

Bru is also heartworm positive and will need his adopter to follow through with his veterinary treatment. He's worth it, though-especially if you happen to have a tennis ball handy.

If your idea of a perfect dog is a gentle companion who will happily follow you around, rest his head in your lap, enjoy a nice walk, and then spend quality time chasing a ball, Brutus may be your guy. Just remember: adoption fee includes one handsome dog. Balls sold separately.

Brutus is a resilient, handsome guy who is feeling much better now that we have answers to his health puzzle! During his time in rescue, Brutus was diagnosed with Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI) and a related Vitamin B12 deficiency-conditions that explained his initial weight loss and tummy troubles.

Now that his diagnosis is clear, managing his health is very straightforward, but it does require a dedicated adopter who is happy to keep up with his daily routine:

Pancreatic Enzyme Powder: Because his body doesn't naturally make enough digestive enzymes, Brutus gets a special supplement mixed right into his food with every meal. This allows him to absorb his nutrients properly, keep his stomach happy, and maintain a healthy weight.

Vitamin B12 Support: He is currently receiving quick weekly B12 injections to rebuild his vitamin levels. Once stabilized, his veterinarian will determine if he can transition to monthly maintenance injections or an oral supplement.

Mild Joint Care: His routine checkup showed mild joint wear in his shoulders and hips, so keeping him on a standard joint supplement will help keep him active and comfortable.

What this means for his future home: Brutus is thriving on his management plan and getting his strength back! His care is simple to maintain-it just involves adding his powder at mealtime and keeping up with routine vet checkups. With this easy daily routine, Brutus is set up to live a happy, active, and full life!

This pet is currently undergoing treatment for heartworm disease. Activity must be restricted for several weeks during recovery. RSR will cover the full cost of treatment. RSR will provide heartworm preventatives until the retest is due. The adopter will be responsible for scheduling the retest and obtaining any follow-up prescriptions through their veterinarian.
