Bruno's Story
Bruno is the sweetest little boy in the galaxy—a classic good-natured, easy-going, lovable beagle with a darling personality. Remarkably quiet, Bruno will bark if he hears someone approaching or unusual noises, but he doesn’t bark constantly when visitors arrive or at trivial sounds like leaves falling. Bruno adores everyone he meets—he gets along great with other dogs, cats and people of all ages, and wins hearts wherever he goes. Despite starting life in solitude and neglect, chained to a tree, fed infrequently and never allowed free, Bruno has remained gentle and loving. A compassionate neighbor began feeding him regularly, and when we were contacted, Bruno joined our foster and adoption program. Upon arrival, he was loaded with fleas, ticks, worms, suffering from malnutrition, tested positive for Ehrlichia (a tick-borne disease), unneutered, and hadn’t received any vaccinations.

Bruno’s foster family welcomed him with the best gift of all freedom - his own fenced yard, meals twice daily, fresh water always at hand, fun daily walks with ‘Dad’ around their property, and cuddling up inside the house with everyone. He’s got lots of toys and consistent attention and loving care. Could life get any better? As a matter of fact, yes!

A unique aspect of our Foster program is the participation of Foster Friends—committed volunteers who assist foster families by providing transportation to grooming or training appointments as required and facilitating enriching outings. These excursions are structured to offer dogs positive experiences with car rides that conclude at engaging destinations, such as Starbucks for a pup cup, rather than exclusively at veterinary clinics. Visits to locations including Lowe’s, PetSmart, and PetCo give Bruno valuable exposure to a variety of people and environments, broadening his social experience and increasing his adaptability. Additionally, these outings enable handlers outside the immediate foster family to reinforce obedience commands in diverse settings, reinforcing that good behavior is expected in all environments. This comprehensive strategy has contributed significantly to Bruno’s increased trust and confidence.

To advance his skill set further, we collaborate with a canine behaviorist, two certified dog trainers, and a professional groomer. Bruno regularly attends training sessions, where he has learned to walk nicely on the leash and has mastered commands such as sit, lay, and place. As a result, Bruno is exceptionally well-prepared for future adoption. He's a 'made' dog!

Bruno has come a long way—from being chained to a tree to becoming a housebroken, crate-trained, and exceptionally well-behaved dog. He’s highly food motivated, which makes him easy to train. Bruno is eager to meet people (although he’s still learning not to jump up), and he rides well in the car—he’d be happiest riding alongside someone. Gentle by nature, Bruno loves running and playing with his toys. He’s energetic but not overly hyper. His unintentionally goofy side, highlighted by his big floppy "Dumbo" ears, never fails to make everyone laugh.

Bruno’s ideal home is one where he’s a beloved member of the family. He would thrive in an active household, especially with children and another dog—this combination would truly make him happy. Because he’s a beagle with a strong sense of smell and curiosity, a fenced yard is essential to keep him safe and out of trouble. Bruno does best with routine, so a family whose children have established daily habits would help him feel comfortable and secure. The presence of kids and other dogs means he'll get plenty of exercise and engagement. There's no need to worry about your children’s friends visiting; Bruno will fit right in. After his difficult start, we’re committed to finding Bruno the loving forever home he deserves.

Our dog adoption is $300, totally vetted; already neutered/spayed, up to date on Core Essential vaccines (rabies, distemper) and Bordetella, Wormed, de-flead, 4DX tested (negative), micro-chipped and already on monthly topical flea/tick/heartworm preventative.

If you are interested in meeting/adopting this dog please submit an application by clicking this link; https://www.culpeperhumane.org/adoptions/adoption-application/

Once submitted, the vet reference you provided will be contacted (if no vet, please provide 3 personal references, may be family and friends if they have a dog that you interact with), and our Director of Adoptions will schedule a phone interview with you. If approved, the Adoption Coordinator contacts you to schedule a home visit (virtual). Once approved, you will be contacted by the foster parent to discuss the dog and arrange the logistics for a visit/adoption. Should both you and the foster parent agree it is a good match, Our rescue group does not have a brick and mortar facility, all our animals are home fostered in our foster volunteer’s homes. You will be visiting a private residence. The application does not oblige you to adopt, nor does the visitation; the application gives us more information to help ensure an appropriate, suitable and good match.

Not first come, first served, but the best possible match made.

Our policy is that we always take our animals back should it prove to be a less than perfect match, or if you are unable or unwilling to care for the animal any longer. We just don't want the animal to go back into the system. It is also our policy NOT to adopt to families with intact dogs or cats (unless there is a medical reason for not doing so). This is an effort to educate and support our national spay/neuter efforts to reduce the unwanted pet population.

We adopt to all of VA, DC and parts of lower MD. Occasionally we will do out of state adoptions, but our preference is given to those aforementioned states. If we need to reclaim or pet is surrendered back, we need to ensure that it is within our epi-center.

Thank you for considering an unwanted and abandoned dog, and being part of the rescue efforts.
