Bruno's Story
Meet Bruno – The Boy Who Beat the Quills and Kept His Chill

We know what you’re thinking: “We don’t talk about Bruno…”?But this Bruno? We’re absolutely going to talk about him.

Bruno is a one-year-old brindle Lab/Pit mix with a story that’s nothing short of remarkable. He was found wandering in Mexico, New York, with porcupine quills embedded in his face — even in his eyes. Thanks to the compassion and quick thinking of a kind woman and her daughter, Bruno received emergency medical care and the chance to start a brand new life.

Despite everything he endured, Bruno is pure heart. He’s sweet, resilient, and endlessly forgiving. His foster mom says he’s a very good boy who loves everyone he meets and is learning all about being a loved and cared-for dog.

Recently, Bruno was evaluated by National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors (NADOI) Certified Instructor and Canine Behavior Specialist Jess Newcomb of CNY Canine Academy / Dogz Gone Wild, who provided incredible insight into what kind of home will make him happiest and most successful.

Jess describes Bruno as a medium-energy, intelligent, biddable, and mentally sound dog who loves affection and social interaction. He’s playful but self-regulating — enjoying games of tug or romping with his foster dog sister Rayne — and while he can get excited, he’s very responsive to verbal cues and redirection.

Bruno is gentle when taking treats, enjoys being handled, and seeks out affection. He’s good at self-entertaining with toys and doesn’t guard them. He does have a bad habit of “hock biting” when excited during play, so his ideal playmates are resilient, medium-to-large dogs who can keep up with his energy level.

Bruno currently lives with a cat — but the relationship is... energetic. He loves to chase and will try to engage the cat in play, and while his feline roommate is unbothered and tolerant, most cats would not appreciate that level of attention. Because of this, Bruno should go to a cat-free home or one with an extremely dog savvy cat, and due to his enthusiasm for squirrels and other small moving things, he may also be inclined to chase smaller dogs.

Bruno is working on being fully house-trained. He will go to the door to show he wants to go out but doesn’t always stay there long. He has been crate-tested (and can escape wire crates), and while he’s loose in the house when his foster is away, he’s been respectful and well-behaved.

Bruno has been introduced to children of all ages and has been gentle and appropriate with all of them. He’s sensitive to yelling or loud tones but responds calmly when reassured. He’s happiest in a calm, positive environment with consistency and kindness.

Bruno’s ideal home would have a fenced yard or be committed to leash-walking for play and exercise. He would thrive with another playful dog companion and with children over 10 years old. Because he may jump when excited, a home without elderly individuals or anyone with fragile skin would be best.

Bruno is truly a gem — the kind of dog who has every reason not to trust, yet greets the world with joy and love. Whoever adopts him will be incredibly lucky to have him by their side.

To help Bruno go From Foster to Forever, apply today at www.oswegocountyspca.org (http://www.oswegocountyspca.org/)

*Important Adoption Information*

When You Submit Your Application:

?Please make sure you have notified your veterinarian that we will be calling and that it is okay to speak with us. If you don’t currently have a vet, please determine which one you will be using and set up care in advance so we can confirm your new pet will receive medical attention when needed.

For Pets Already in the Home:?

Because the number of homeless animals in our area is so large, we adopt only to homes where current pets are spayed or neutered, with documented medical exceptions. We also require that all resident pets be up to date on their vaccinations to help ensure that everyone — both new and existing family members — stays healthy and safe.

Keep in Mind:?

We are 100% foster-based and 100% volunteer-operated, from the top down. Our team works hard to get animals into their forever homes as quickly as possible. Please be patient with us — but if you don’t hear back within a few days, feel free to message us on our Facebook page to confirm your application went through.
