Brody's Story

Brody is an 11 month old, 73 lb active male who loves his people and toys. Family situations dictated he come to rescue. He was well loved and trained when he first came to his family. Life got in the way and too many responsibilities forced the attention to other areas. Unfortunately he became nervous and barking when he saw other dogs and a bit much to handle. He has not been socialized with other dogs or people for a while and this is something that he needs to be worked with. HIs nervous behavior and barking makes it difficult to walk where there are other dogs. Greeting people, he is excited to see them and sometimes jumps up.

There were a couple of children (under 10) in the home, as well as a cat. He did constantly get into the litter box which caused Brody quite a bit of upset stomach and loose stool issues. He did well with the kids, although he is a bit pushy and that does not work with some children.

Walking, he is a puller, but again, that is training. He was on a prong collar to allow his owner to control him. We have moved him to a martingale collar and that seems to improve the pulling a bit, but leash training is practice and then more practice. He has been on both a short (6 ft) and long (15-30 ft) leash when walking in unpopulated areas and he likes to sniff and comes back when called. He also would be a good candidate for a well fitted harness for his walks. He has not been out and about where there are other dogs and people very often. We are not sure he is yet ready for all that activity and stimulation.

Brody probably did not have much interaction with other animals other than the cat. He does get along with the older dogs in rescue, but he is pushy which does not sit well with some dogs, especially older ones. The other younger dog in rescue and Brody seem to be at odds with one another, not sure if it is the closeness in age, jealousy for attention or a two, new male dog situation here in rescue. As an only dog, he would be a fantastic addition to someone's home.

He loves to play outside, and he loves to sniff everything on walks. He is sneaky and will pick up all sorts of things in his mouth, so he does need to be watched closely on walks outside. He is active and needs lots of exercise to release his puppy energy, so a fenced area is the only way to currently accomplish this. His sit, down and come commands are pretty good, although we have not tried "come" in an open area with him unleashed. If you say "place" and indicate where you want him to be, he will rush to that spot. Brody is treat motivated with great eye contact, so training will be a good bonding opportunity with good results.

He is now UTD on all his shots including bordetella, canine flu, is microchipped, fecal check was negative, heartworm tested, and he has healed from his neuter. He came to us in a very short cut and it appears that his fur has turned a grey and white as many OES do. He is housetrained and can last 8-10 hours during the night before needing to go out. His tail is docked, a little longer than normal, and dewclaws are removed.

He can be a barker when he wants attention or is nervous. Brody is content to stay quietly in his crate with a good chew toy or long-lasting treat. A strong chewer, he needs toys that are durable and will keep him occupied. He does have quite a few soft stuffed toys that came with him to rescue and he is gentle and snuggles next to them. To date he has not shaken or pulled the stuffing out of any soft toys. Brody has not been destructive of anything in the home. He is not protective of his toys or his food with the humans here.
He does eat very quickly which has made us wet down his dry kibble quite a bit to slow his eating. A puzzle bowl works also but does not slow food intake as much as watered down food does.

Completely housetrained, no accidents ever when he is let out for regular potty breaks.

He should be in a home without children or definitely older children. Older adults need to have strong balance until Brody understands his manners. His behaviors are not aggressive at all, but he does not understand personal space. Again, a training issue for this playful dog. Someone who is able to spend a good deal of time, possibly retired and committed to formal training would be a good match for him.

Brody is crate trained, sleeps in his crate during the night, he will become nervous if he is left alone a large amount of time. Barking and whining will ensue if he sees you are getting ready to leave, or to go walk or play with another dog. He would do well with someone that works from home as opposed to someone being gone 6+ hours a day. He is active and loves belly and ear rubs.

Brody needs limits set for him and he will comply. This will come with training and Brody is willing if you will spend the time.
