Brayden: Male Shih Tzu/Chihuahua mix DOB June 2, 2025's Story

Introducing Brayden!
PLEASE READ OUR PUPPY ADOPTION POLICY HERE BEFORE APPLYING https://hobohavenrescue.ca/puppy-adoption-policy

Brayden is a Shih Tzu/Chihuahua mix male puppy DOB June 2, 2025
who joined our rescue from a hoarding situation along with his three brothers
To view all of the puppies and our other adoptable dogs, please visit https://hobohavenrescue.ca/current-dogs

Each dog in our care has their own album on facebook where we post regular updates including videos and more photos, please click here to view our albums of dogs in our rescue https://www.facebook.com/hobohavenrescue/photos_albums

Based on our assessment of his temperament so far, he would be fine as an only dog in the home or also be fine in a home with another dog IF the dog is a younger, playful dog whom would be tolerant and accepting of a very boisterous puppy.

The puppies have now had their first vet visit, first vaccinations and their adoption will include DHPP booster vaccination, rabies vaccination, and neuter surgery . Approx adult weight 15-20lbs
As a mixed breed these puppies are not hypoallergenic

Notes from Brayden's foster mom:
Brayden is up and making squeaky sounds at 6:00 am. He goes out immediately to potty and then plays one and off for about 2 hours before returning to the crate to rest for a few hours. This routine is repeated with short play periods all day until 4pm when he is out of the crate until 9:30 pm, with a late pee at 11pm and then he sleeps through the night.

Brayden is very food motivated.

Brayden very much enjoys interacting with all of the dogs in the house. He can be timid and will run away if he doesn't like how other dogs are responding to him. Brayden watches the other dogs around him and wants to be engaged with what they are doing as long as play is not boisterous.

Brayden is hesitant to meet new people, but with a patient approach, he is interested in interacting through toys and treats. Due to his lack of early socialization, Brayden will need more time to become snuggly and fully trusting, but he does look to hide near people when he is overwhelmed. He is physically sensitive and anxious being handled, but this is improving with time and positive experiences in his foster home.

Brayden watches the family cat, but does not interact with it.

Brayden is interested in any new objects in his space, but does not guard them.

Housetrained? No
Crate trained? Yes
Brayden generally settles quickly in the crate unless he is hungry, has excess energy or needs to pee. He sees it as a safe spot and will consistently choose to rest in the crate throughout the day.

Brayden is nervous when handled, freezes or wiggles, but with a slow and patient approach he allows all necessary handling. He often seeks out people to stay near, in order to feel safe outdoors

As a young puppy, Brayden is still a blank slate. He is interested in watching everything and wants to be where people are. He is currently timid and nervous, but is gaining confidence. Brayden is inquisitive, busy and bouncy.

Things needing improvement specifics please Confidence building through careful, low pressure handling and frequent, small, positive exposures to new situations. Housetraining is a work in progress and Brayden often pees on mats and right outside the patio door.

Brayden has a small reducible hernia which will need to be repaired by our vet when he is neutered.-covered by the rescue of course.

Brayden keeps the crate clean and will whimper to go out of the crate to pee or poop. Currently he will whine at the back door to go outside and poop, but will pee on any rug or mat in the house. He depends on routines of going outside frequently to help him learn where to pee.

Brayden likes to follow the family into the back yard and enjoys hopping around in the garden, sniffing and watching what is happening.

Strengths/areas they have improved on: Brayden is becoming less cautious towards the dogs and people in the house and actively seeks out people to sit near.

Brayden is calm in the crate when travelling.

Brayden would be happy as an only dog or with a gentle medium energy dog. He will thrive provided he has significant low key, positive gentle socialization with a variety of people that allow him to approach at his own speed and have treats and gentle petting, or meeting for dog dates with trusted dogs who are indifferent or low energy. (Not leashed greetings with strange dogs or quick, forced encounters with strangers, nor dog parks ever!

His ideal home is with a family who understands he has things he needs to improve upon and is willing to make sure he has the right exposure and training to set him up for success.

As a young pup it is important he be (positively and appropriately) exposed to lots of new places, people and situations.

Older children whom are dog savvy and respectful are welcome in a home set up for safety to prevent stair accidents or door darting. Brayden is a tiny, and timid, fragile puppy who is not suitable for younger children for safety and to meet his needs best.

Adoption Fee $850-includes vaccinations, microchip, neuter surgery, deworming, flea/tick/heartworm prevention and all vet care, food and supplies during their time with us.
Our adoption fees do not completely cover the costs incurred by our rescue including rising vet expenses, food, supplies and transportation
Anyone questioning adoption fees is invited to call your vet for a quote on providing everything that is done for our dogs prior to their adoptions.

Hobo Haven is located in St Jacobs Ontario.
For approved families, we require in person meetings in St Jacobs ON

If you are interested in applying to adopt a dog from Hobo Haven Rescue, please use this link to submit an application
https://hobohavenrescue.ca/dog-adoption-application

An adoption application must be completed and approved, including vet references as well as a home visit (Zoom during COVID), prior to meeting available dogs.
All dogs are placed in loving foster homes during their time with us, we do not have a shelter to visit.

We do not allow applicants to visit until pre-approved for adoptions. Our dogs are in private foster family homes, not in a shelter.

Any questions may be emailed to hobohavenpetrescue@gmail.com

Due to the high volume of applications received for our dogs, priority of replies will be given to applicants who meet the criteria mentioned in the pet's profile.

We understand how disappointing in can be if your family is not an ideal match for our dogs , but please understand that our policies are for the dog's best interests first and foremost.
We put a lot of time and effort into carefully assessing each dog's individual temperaments and personalities/needs.

Please do not ask us to make exceptions

Emails are best, our volunteers work full time and are often not able to answer or return phone calls in a timely manner.
