Bixby's Story
Bixby is 4 - 5 years old, and just 28 lbs. Bixby is a gorgeous and sweet Cattle Dog mix, with possibly Rat Terrier (or something small) in there as well. We of course do not DNA test our rescue dogs, so his breed is just an educated guess by the Houston vet.

Farfel's Rescue received a plea from our Texas rescue partner asking us to save the life of sweet Bixby when his time was up at the shelter. This is through no fault of his own but rather due to lack of space in the shelter. They described this adorable boy as wonderful, dog-loving, playful, and silly!

From Bixby's foster:
* * * *
"Bixby has been a wonderful house guest in foster care and shown his silly personality once he warmed up! Bixby was shy of my husband and I at first, (more hesitant of my husband) but warmed up after a few days! Even though he was nervous of us at first, he has shown ZERO aggression. Before he is totally warmed up, he can be a little dart-y so make sure to keep him on a secure leash for the first day or 2! But really all it took was a day or 2 and then he was totally happy here.

Bixby is playful and loves playing, running, and getting the zoomies in the yard. He love love LOVED our foster puppy, who was like a 7 pound pit puppy and him and Bixby played constantly! He also liked trying to play with my older bigger dog, but she is grumpy and didn’t want much to do with him. He listened to her corrections very well! He definitely loves dogs (more than people probably) and would thrive in a home with another playful dog.

I don’t know how well Bixby would not do well in busy, social environments. He’s not a “brewery dog” since he’s a bit shy of new people. He does best getting his energy out with my dogs in the yard.

Bixby does well in his crate and sleeps quietly in it, and appears fully potty trained! He eats in his crate and will guard his crate (or maybe his food?) I would probably recommend a cat-free home, but he’s been good with my cat so far. But sometimes stares at her a little too hard, haha.
Dog-wise, again, Bixby has done exceptionally well with out tiny puppy foster and is gentle, appropriate, and sweet.

Bixby walks great on leash, but he does not like leash pressure on his collar. I will walk him using a harness only, which works very well. In crowded spaces he can get overwhelmed and a bit skittish, but on a quiet easy neighborhood walk he does fine!

He enjoys squeaky toys and chewing on stuffies. He knows how to “sit”, but will need basic training & confidence-building. He is an active dog who needs regular exercise and engagement.

Bixby is really a good boy. Just be patient for the first few days as he warms up and figures it out! He improved with us a lot in just the first week! And that’s just because he’s shy and skittish a bit at first, which isn’t unusual for a newly rescued dog!"
* * * *

We would like to see Bixby in a home with a family (because Bixby is shy with new people at first, we do not recommend him to a home with kids) or active retirees who have the time and love for this sweet pup. We'd hate to see Bixby left alone all day while his family works full-time outside of the home.

Farfel's Rescue would like to see Bixby in a home where he'll get consistent stimulation, exercise and tons of loving hugs. A virtual or in-person positive reinforcement group training class promotes great behavior, bonding and confidence for a sweet pup whose self-esteem will fly high while he masters his skills. Training is so important in the future behaviors of every dog. It's for this reason that we're unwilling to adopt Bixby out to a family that doesn't make this loving choice. Farfel's is happy to provide a list of both in-person and virtual positive reinforcement / force- free trainers in your area.

Bixby has been fully vetted and vaccinated to support Farfel's contention that our adopted dogs are always completely healthy. He has also been neutered to forward Farfel's commitment to a euthanasia - free future within the canine population. Bixby has what appears to be an old corneal injury in one eye. There is no pain, swelling, or discharge, and no treatment is needed. The vet said he may have limited vision or blindness in that eye, but his other eye is just fine and he can see normally with that one, so this doesn’t effect him in any way he has shown!

Bixby is available for adoption now! Applications are currently being accepted for this very sweet, loving and loyal best friend. An application can be found at http://farfels.com/farfels-rescue/adoption-form/. If interested, please fill out completely and submit.

**PLEASE NOTE** If you're truly interested in adopting Bixby please be sure to fill out our Farfel's Rescue adoption application found at the link above or at farfels.com. Adoption site applications such as Petfinder and Adoptapet don't provide enough information and therefore aren't useful. Our Farfel's application is the only initial tool that we have to determine a great match for this very deserving dog.
