Bismarck's Story

Bismarck is a 6 year-old, neutered male GSP. He was found as a stray in rural Indiana. He was emaciated and cold, and some good samaritans took him into their home for a week, trying to find his family. They contacted their friend who runs a no-kill shelter in Indiana. She gladly took him in, and hoped he'd find a loving forever home. However, "adult" dogs, especially sporting dogs, are hard to adopt out in rural Indiana.

Weeks after entering foster care, the shelter did hear from his prior owner. He did not want Bismarck back because he said he had a tendency to run off after catching a scent while hunting (who can blame him??). He told us he was a friendly dog, great with children, and even great with cats! (The shelter confirmed this…they would bring him into the office during the day, where he would lounge around with two cats in the same area...no issues whatsoever).

We spoke to Bismarck's breeder as well. He comes from fine hunting lines, and was a trained hunter. For a hobby hunting family, he may be a great match, however, given his propensity for wandering off, he would need to remain on a long check cord for safety or the new owner should do obedience training to the point of offleash.

When we learned of Bismarck, we just knew he could find a loving home through our rescue. Bismarck is a love bug through and through. He enjoys cuddling with his foster family. He gets along well with his canine foster brother and sister, and his human foster brother and sister. He doesn't enjoy being crated alone, but doesn't mind sharing a large crate with his canine foster sister.
Bismarck bonds quickly with his humans, and will definitely be a snuggly sofa companion, if that is what you desire.

Bismarck did live outdoors in a kennel in his former home. However, he has taken well to indoor life, and is housebroken. Given we know he is good with children, both from his former owner and his foster family, we feel Bismarck would do well in a home with children over the age of five. Generally speaking, GSPs are quite active, and could accidentally knock over a younger child, so children over five are usually a better match for an active and strong breed. Though for a savvy GSP owner we would consider it.

Bismarck knows how to heel while on leash, and was trained to come to a whistle. He is a well behaved boy, with medium/low energy indoors (he settles in nicely and is quite low key most of the time), but like all GSPs, he loves to run and play outside, and will need an active family to provide him with adequate exercise.

This boy is such a sweetheart, and such an easy keeper. He would make a wonderful, loving addition to most any family. Bismarck is being fostered in Ohio. Transportation can be arranged to his new adoptive family.

If you are interested in hearing more about Bismarck, please fill out the Adoption Application
and additional questions can be posed to the rescue.
