Birdie's Story

Birdie • 1YearOld Newfoundland • A Gentle Soul Learning to unfurl her wings

Located in MD

Some dogs burst into rescue like fireworks. Birdie arrived more like a quiet sunrise. She grew up in a home full of dogs but with very little human interaction, and now she is discovering the world one brave step at a time. Her foster family describes her as a soft, thoughtful girl who watches everything with wide, wondering eyes.

Birdie can still be a little unsure with new people, but she is already showing how much she wants to connect. She now approaches her foster family on her own, choosing closeness with a gentle curiosity that feels like a tiny miracle every time. She accepts affection and is learning that touch can be comforting.

Step outside, and Birdie begins to take flight in her own quiet way. She trots and runs with a clumsy, joyful bounce, exploring the yard with her tail floating behind her like a little flag. She moves beautifully for a big girl, even if she occasionally forgets where her paws are supposed to go. Deck stairs are easy for her, and she recently discovered the basement, although she is still puzzling out how to get back up from it (good thing it's a walkout!). She is doing well on leash and tends to walk politely, sometimes circling behind you as she figures out the rhythm of walking with a person.

Birdie is truly a dog's dog. She adores the resident dogs and has met several others with perfect manners. She learns from them, follows their lead, and blossoms in their company. A confident canine companion is not just helpful for Birdie. It is essential. She also gets along beautifully with cats and has been calm and appropriate with children around seven and eight years old. She does not rush toward them, but she coexists peacefully and simply continues her gentle exploration of the world.

She is doing well with housebreaking and typically heads to the door if she needs to go. She is not very food motivated, which is unusual for a Newfoundland, but she has learned from her foster sibling that it is fun to get up and look around for toys. She loves to play and is slowly learning the basics and Birdie is ready for her next little milestone.

Birdie rides nicely in the car and handles new environments with quiet bravery. She does show some separation anxiety and may shred things when left alone, so she will need someone who is home more often than not. She is still learning that people come back.

Birdie is a tender, slowblooming soul who will never take love for granted. She is learning to trust, learning to play, learning to be part of a family. If you are looking for a gentle companion to nurture and grow with, Birdie is ready to take those steps with you. She just needs the right nest to truly spread her wings.

Birdie's Forever Home Wishlist

A patient, gentle adopter who celebrates small steps
Someone home more often than not
A confident resident dog to guide her
A securely fenced yard for safe exploring
A calm, steady household that lets her blossom at her own pace

It's never too soon to submit an application. You only need to apply once to be considered for any dog who is a match for your home.

** Want to send this dog a gift? When you purchase a bib or bandana from our store with the code 4FOSTER they will receive it. The rescue receives the profit from the sale and the foster dog receives a gift!

When purchasing for a specific dog, please include that note in the comments.

Or, purchase one for yourself!

Link for Bibs

https://nationalnewfoundlandrescue.com/product-category/bib/

Link for Bandanas

https://nationalnewfoundlandrescue.com/product-category/bandanas/
