Bheema's Story

This handsome fella is Bheema, an approximately 1-year-old male living in Seattle. Bheema is cautious about the world around him and needs confidence building to overcome his “protective” nature. This boy is looking for a quiet home where he can feel safe and continue to work on his skills and overcoming his fear of being left alone (separation anxiety).

Bheema was adopted in early August 2025 from a small rural shelter in Eastern Washington. He was an adolescent when he came in as a stray, so we have no history of where he came from or what kind of early life he had. After his stray hold was up and no one claimed him, the shelter neutered him and put him out for adoption. A kind couple from Seattle adopted him and have been working with a trainer, vets, and behavior modification to help him become more comfortable in his own skin, but feel that their busy Seattle neighborhood is too much for him and his sensitivity and his needs are more than they can provide.
I have not met Bheema in person yet, but am told he is 90 pounds, so not a big boy, and loves his people – he is very attached to his family, cuddly and very loving. He loves to run and play and is smart and trainable. But he’s also concerned about strangers – visitors to the home can feel threatening to him and in his fearfulness he becomes “protective” and will sometimes bark at certain people. He is usually good in public with other people of all ages and dogs. He is mostly friendly but every once in a while he will become protective if he feels that a stranger is too close and will growl/lunge on leash.

Bheema is crated at night and does well, but cannot be left crated unattended, as he panics when left alone. His owners hire a dog sitter to stay with him if they both have to be gone at the same time. They have worked with their veterinarian and he’s on medications that have helped curb his anxieties somewhat, but at this time he cannot be left alone in the home or car.

He knows sit, stay, down, come, leave it, release, heel and is very smart and eager to please. He does well with other dogs unless they are “alpha” males; he’s generally better with female dogs, and would do well in a home with a female dog of similar age and size – a friendly, non-reactive confident dog-buddy to help him to learn that the world isn’t threatening and he doesn’t have to be so worried about new people or things.

Bheema has a lot of love to give and needs a quiet home with someone dedicated to continuing his training to develop confidence and feel more comfortable about the world. He loves to get out in nature and sniff, and would be an excellent adventure buddy for hiking, and scent work games would be a great outlet for him to grow confidence as well. Sniff games are the BEST!

Apply to adopt Bheema: https://forms.spdrdogs.org/Adoption/
Washington State – no interstate transports.
