Betsy Ross's Story

Playful and resilient Betsy Ross is looking for her furever home in Florida!

Betsy Ross got her name after she was found on the Fourth of July, abandoned inside a crate and left outside in the heat. Her skin was incredibly sensitive and covered in painful rashes from what she had endured. She had every reason to be afraid of the world, but this resilient girl is slowly learning that people can be safe and life can be good.

Betsy is settling beautifully into her foster home and has already started working on basic obedience, including sit, down, touch, come, and leash skills. She is incredibly smart and continues to make progress every day.

Because of her past, Betsy needs a family who understands that trust may take a little time. She tends to feel more comfortable with women and can be cautious around new people, particularly men. In her foster home, she may bark and keep her distance from unfamiliar men at first. Meeting new people on neutral ground is easier for her, although she can still occasionally be standoffish until she realizes she is safe.

And once Betsy decides you are safe? You get to see the sweet, loving, goofy girl underneath all of that uncertainty. She is continuing to work on her confidence around other dogs and is already showing improvement. Betsy is still young, learning, healing, and working through the trauma of everything she experienced before being rescued.

What makes her so special is how far she has already come. From being left outside in a crate on the Fourth of July with painful skin and no one looking out for her, to learning commands, going on walks, building relationships, and discovering what it feels like to be loved.

Betsy Ross is looking for someone patient and compassionate who will give her the time she needs to feel safe and continue becoming the amazing dog we already know she is.

She is available for adoption in the Tampa Bay Area. Please apply online or send us a message for more information.
www.compassionkind.org/adopt

Compassion Kind's Adoption Policy
Compassion Kind is a 501c3 global humanitarian and animal welfare organization inspiring global citizens to extend their circle of compassion to all kind. We work with partners and volunteers on the ground in Puerto Rico to educate and reduce the suffering of animals due to natural disasters and the ongoing stray problem. A majority of our cats and dogs are from Puerto Rico, but we do take in occasional local owner surrenders as well. Once our animals are taken into our care, we assess their needs and how we can provide the best care and forever home for them. We begin their vetting process while in Puerto Rico and finish after they are flown and placed in foster care in Florida. All animals' vetting is completed by the time of adoption. During our foster process, we continue to analyze their behaviors and needs to help us find the best fit for them. Once we begin taking applications for each animal, we begin our screening process to see how each candidate may fit the specific animals needs. We then choose 2-3 potential candidates, as we don't want to overwhelm the cat or dog, for a meet and greet. Our meet and greets help the potential adopter and pet see if they are a great match! If the meet and greet goes very well, the potential candidate may move into our one week home trial. During the home trial, we do a home visit and check in to make sure that the dog or cat is adjusting well. At the end of the trial, if it is the perfect match, we move into adoption in which their individual adoption fee is paid and we transfer all records and paperwork to the adopter. Our animals are so important to us; we work hard to save them and we owe it to them to find the best life for them. We love to keep in touch with all of our adopters so we can continue to watch our cats and dogs flourish!
