Bessie's Story
Meet Bessie - The Quirky Girl Who May Be Her Own Biggest Fan

Bessie is affectionate, playful, cuddly, a little goofy-and apparently very impressed with the dog she sees in the mirror.

This sweet girl loves people, loves kids, enjoys her toys, and has a personality that keeps her foster family laughing. She's playful when it's time for fun but also has a serious couch-potato side and is perfectly happy settling in for cuddles and a nap.

Add in one fantastic floppy ear, some pretty impressive front teeth, and a tongue that likes to make an appearance, and Bessie has a look that's every bit as memorable as her personality.

Bessie Loves:

-Being with people
-Playing with toys
-Chewing on bones
-Cuddling
-Napping
-Meeting new people
-Playing with compatible dogs
-Quiet relaxation
-Indoor enrichment
-Food and treats
-Shoes-although she'd really prefer you consider them chew toys

Bessie's Favorite Thing:

Her people.

Bessie is immediately friendly and loves attention. She's affectionate, cuddly, and genuinely seems happiest when she's part of what's happening.

She's also wonderful with children and loves having them around.

Despite having plenty of playful energy, Bessie knows how to settle. She has a nice medium energy level and can go from goofy playtime to couch-potato mode without much trouble.

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall...

Bessie's foster home has sliding mirrored closet doors.

Bessie has decided these are fantastic.

She regularly goes over to admire herself, runs around in front of the mirror, barks at her reflection, and even brings her toys over to play.

Does she realize she's looking at herself?

Maybe.

Does she think there's another incredibly attractive dog living inside the closet?

Also possible.

Either way, watching Bessie bouncing around in front of the mirror with her floppy ear and tongue hanging out has become one of her foster family's favorite things.

A Girl Who Appreciates Personal Space

Bessie can live with other dogs, but she's not looking for a canine roommate who wants to be in her face constantly.

She does well coexisting with respectful dogs who understand personal space and would be best matched with that type of canine companion.

She also coexists well with cats.

Bessie loves kids, making her a nice candidate for a family home.

About the Shoe Situation...

Bessie has a slight obsession.

Shoes.

She thinks they're wonderful.

Unfortunately, she doesn't necessarily appreciate them for the same reasons humans do.

Bessie needs plenty of appropriate chew toys and a family willing to keep tempting footwear out of reach while reinforcing what belongs to her and what doesn't.

She's food and toy motivated, which should be helpful when training. She doesn't have established commands yet, so there's plenty of opportunity for her future family to continue building those skills.

A Few Things to Know:

-House trained
-Crate trained
-Good leash skills
-Medium energy
-No established commands yet
-Food motivated
-Toy motivated
-Immediately friendly with people
-Loves attention
-Loves children
-Coexists well with cats
-Can live with respectful dogs
-Would prefer dogs who aren't constantly in her space
-Can be stubborn
-Fearful of loud noises
-Does better in quieter environments
-Improving with continued exposure
-Can get excited and jumpy
-Loves chewing and needs plenty of appropriate chew options
-Shoes need to be kept out of reach
-Equally capable of being playful and becoming a couch potato

Great Activities for Bessie:

-Quiet neighborhood walks
-Playing with toys
-Chewing on appropriate bones and chews
-Indoor enrichment
-Training games
-One-on-one bonding
-Low-stimulation outings
-Family time
-Couch cuddles
-Napping
-Playing with respectful dog friends
-Quiet days at home
-Checking herself out in every available mirror

Best Match:

-Patient adopters
-Families with children
-Homes with cats
-Homes with respectful, easygoing dogs
-Someone looking for an affectionate companion
-A family comfortable continuing her training
-A home that can provide plenty of appropriate chew toys
-Someone willing to help her continue building confidence around new experiences and loud noises
-People who appreciate a dog with a quirky sense of humor

Three Words That Describe Bessie Best:

Playful
Affectionate
Quirky

Foster Location:

La Crosse - French Island, WI

Meet & Greet Availability:
Bessie's foster is happy to meet approved adopters within approximately one hour of her foster home.

Bessie is believed to have come into rescue as an owner surrender, although we don't know much about the circumstances surrounding her previous home.

What we do know is the dog she is today.

She's affectionate, funny, people-oriented, wonderful with kids, and perfectly capable of keeping herself entertained-especially if there's a mirror available.

She's got a floppy ear, big front teeth, an occasionally dangling tongue, a questionable appreciation for footwear, and enough personality to make even ordinary days entertaining.

Bessie doesn't need another dog constantly trying to engage her. She'd be perfectly happy with respectful animal friends, plenty of time with her humans, a good collection of chew toys, and a comfortable place to cuddle.

And perhaps a full-length mirror.

Ready to meet Bessie?
