Bertram's Story
Bertram is a 2ish year old 15# Chihuahua-Rat-Terrier-Type-Mix. He will need an active adopter to keep him busy, and he would likely enjoy a canine companion too. He will not be a good fit for an apartment or rental-type situation, as he can be pretty opinionated and vocal. If you're looking for a calmer lap-dog, he is not the boy for you, but if you want an adventure buddy that will keep up with you, he's your guy!

Bertram was actually adopted from an area shelter, but his adopter realized that his home is not the best fit and is fostering him through us until we find him the perfect home! The adopter has had him for about a month, and he provided the following information:

Bertram is a loving, affectionate dog with a playful, puppy-like personality. He should do okay with another dog and possibly with older children, as he can get excitable during play, but responds to correction (“ow” and “no”). He enjoys chewing on his toys. He thrives on companionship and would flourish in a home where someone works from home or is around often. He needs a fenced yard to run (he loves sprinting in big circles) but should be supervised, as he might look for ways out. He barks occasionally at nearby dogs, squirrels, or passersby. Indoors, he's a cuddly dog who enjoys being on furniture and watching the world from windows. If someone does not want pets on the furniture, he is not the dog for them. He is used to sleeping in a bed, and is quite the nighttime cuddler. He's fairly good on a leash, improving with training, and enjoys car rides (with the windows up so that he doesn't jump out after a squirrel!)

He is nearly fully potty trained (99% there). I had him for close to a month now, and he had minor accidents - peed once in the house on day one, and I misread his body language twice (pacing throughout the house) when he needed to poop. He may protest (howl) when left alone in his crate, but has not been destructive. Bertram needs patience and understanding, as he can be timid and sensitive to sudden movements or loud noises, possibly due to a difficult past. However, he is protective, eager to please, and quick to learn. Commands he knows (some stronger than others): No, Bad, Come (understands the concept but needs work), Sit, Down, Up up (to signal you're picking him up), Night night / Sleepers (bedtime), Where is your baby? (to find his toy of the day).

Bertram is neutered, microchipped, and current on vaccines. He is being fostered in Bay City, MI and his adoption fee is $100.
